Plastic sweating

Postby retrobmxr » Sun Jan 10, 2016 11:04 pm

I have a question for some of the collectors that have been here a long time. Have you noticed the plastic becoming sticky or sweating? I put some of my collection in storage for a few years because I ran out of space to display all of it. When I started going through the collection to take inventory I noticed a few wobblers with this condition. Can they be cleaned up? If yes, what would be safe?

Yes. Monkey Assassins sweat like a mo-fo.

There's a chemical used to keep the plastic soft that leaches out on some vinyl toys, it's oily and sticky. Senor Carlos Glow sweats, too. You can wash them with Dawn and a magic sponge. It can take some effort to get it off the toy, but it can be done.

Since I've had it happen to me, I make a point of taking new vinyl toys out of their packaging and letting them breathe for a couple weeks if I can do so without destroying the box. Some still sweat, but I've noticed that it's not as much as stuff I leave in a box.

Like Squird said, warm soapy water and magic eraser should do it. I have also used a toothbrush before just because it was handy and that worked for me.

Some of my wobbler protos also have this problem. The white ones also have a tendency to yellow as well - even though not exposed to sunlight. I first wash with Dawn, and use a soft toothbrush. Then to reduce the yellowing, I'll wash with Soft Scrub with Bleach. Again using a soft toothbrush. I needed to do this with a few of the sports wobblers I recently posted. I have not found any ill affect on the plastic, even after a few years after cleaning.

I recently handled my set of white Popeye protos - YUK! - they are next when I feel the urge to de-stickie them. They at least did not yellow.

I've been doing the warm-soapy water trick :-k but will definitely be trying some of the tricks mentioned above! Until recently I've only had this issue with a few of my Spastiks, but some wobblers have been getting the sweats as well now.

I get that on a lot of my wobbler protos, since I just took them all out of storage a good portion of them got that way. But as people have said those magic erasers work magic.

When I got my Monkey Assassin's from P+P they had a sticky residue on them too and I asked @wunderlandwar on IG what it was and they said it was from the plastic sweating or "breathing" . I haven't cleaned them off just yet but at least now I know what to try!

Anything left in a plastic tube will "sweat" even more. The Fantastik Plastiks, & Spastik Plastiks are the worst.

No because Funko will never use that type of Vinyl again. It only occurs on a few Funko lines and wobblers from a certain time period. Look at it as a lesson learned by the company.

This explains why 2 different wobblers I picked up recently had sticky residue all over them. I cleaned both up as best as I could with dawn but you can still see some weird faint marks where the sticky residue was. I contacted the sellers and they apparently knew nothing about it. From the sound of it it seems like this happens over time and not in a few days. Good to know. Thanks for reviving this thread.

I have had a couple Pops with a wet residue that wipes right off and while not the same as Wobbler/Spastik sweats it did seem to be the same sort of thing.

I might have to try it out. I was just hesitant to use the magic eraser. Those spots are bugging me on the Freddy holding the cannibal. Love the Freddy but I am kinda picky when I know something is wrong with it.

I haven't come across it yet really, I've been collecting since 2014 and have always been out of box (I hear keeping them in box/tube has alot to do with it) except for around 100 very expensive pieces or signed boxes. I dust them off regularly and haven't noticed any sticky looking paint, I also keep the temp low in my house so maybe that possibly helps it?
