Are one in 12 sets no fun
I was never big on mystery minis. Before... then I bought some. Three game of thrones ones last christmas, 14 or so walking dead ones a month or two ago and now the supernatural ones. And while it is frustrating not getting the ones you want or always getting duplicates it also seems like buy a full case of 1 in 12s knowing exactly what you are going to get would be not fun. Just my opinion. It is making me reluctant to buy a case of the tmnt figures

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
It takes the mystery out of it for sure but it's no different then liking a set of pop and buying them. Me personally if I want the set, I would buy the case just because doubles, triple and quads get really annoying, especially when for the most part everyone is trying to trade the same pieces.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
I don't mind it. Means I don't have a pile of duplicate figures sitting around accumulating dust somewhere.
You can also run into instances like the Disney Heroes vs. Villains set, where it's a core set of 1:12 figures, but with 2 sets of Hot Topic figures inserted in place of 4 normal figures.

No .. it's way more fun to buy 5 minis in a Hot Topic only to open them and they are all the same mini.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
1/12 minis are better, IMO. the 1/72 pieces are too hard to pull and cost too much in the secondary market. If i like the set i would much rather buy 1 case and have them all than buy 4 cases to get them all, statistically speaking.

I like the current mix. Couple series of 1/12 and then a real tough one (Inside Out, Heroes/Villains, Frozen).

I'm a big fan of the Minis, but not of the Mystery part. I like to know what I'm buying. Wouldn't want to buy canned food without labels or with labels that said "food", only to find out some of them contained pickled pigs feet rather than corn.

I do love collecting the minis, but I actually do not like the mystery at all! I prefer to see what I'm buying, getting doubles of things irritates me rather quickly I will probably always keep buying them though because the figures are too cute to pass up! :P But I much prefer it when I can buy a whole case and be done

Story of my life with that dang Frozen set. I finally just gave up on it.
I agree with what most people have said though, I'd rather be able to buy a case if it's a set I like and know that I will get all the figures than try to buy boxes here and there and end up with tons of duplicates that I have to try to trade off or sell. I'm more likely to complete a set if it's a 1/12 than if there's rarer pieces because it just gets way too expensive.

I LOVE the minis- NOT the mystery-
I always buy the entire case to ensure that I get all the ones that I want. 1/72 drive me crazy because it means I might get the entire case and still not get the one I want unless I resort to ebay...

I prefer the 1:12 cases as it's easier to get all the characters.
Sets with 17 or so figures are fine and it used to be fun hunting down the rarer ones, but it gets just too expensive now doing it that way. Also with Hot Topic exclusives being 1:72 now the secondary market prices are insane!

haven't bought an entire set yet - haven't seen one set that I wanted all the figures. I like the excitement for blind boxes but do also hate getting doubles/triples/etc of the same figure. i collect other Blind/mystery box toys as well like Kid Robots. those really suck when you get duplicates. maybe if I like 10 of 12 minis - I'll buy the set next time. just to clarify - the 1/12 sets, if you buy the entire box, it's guaranteed to get them all?

I'm with Craig here. If it's a set I like, I don't want to blow through a bunch of extra cash and deal with duplicates just for the *chance* to get my favorites.
So far I've bought unboxed individuals off of eBay from sets that I only wanted a handful of, and entire display boxes for 1:12 ones where I wanted all of them.

I agree. I am a definite Blind Box junkie. I love the highs and lows of "you don't know what you'll get." Dupes are a definite drawback but they are great to give to friends and family to get them hooked as well. An added benefit to this approach is that you local trading group becomes larger Unwrapping a 1/72 or 1/144 is a great feeling though... Top of the world, Ma!

99.999% yes. Human error does happen every once-in-a-while though. I would not hesitate to buy a case because of it though.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
I'm a trading card collector which means I love the mystery and hunt. Although it's annoying to get duplicates I loved the rush of not knowing what I'm getting and it was a great feeling, like I won the lottery, to pull a 1/144. I miss that feeling. Needless to say, I'm not much of a mystery mini addict anymore. The 1/12 cases were like my 12 step rehab program.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
I definitely prefer 1:12. Some of the 1:144 just kill me (e.g. Zero from NBC: S1 - i.e. the one I want most since the others look weird). However, if they stuck to a wider range like they did, I'd be more selective on the minis I do get. As it is, I end up buying a full case to get all since, even if I don't necessarily want them all, because it costs about the same as buying the few I do want through Ebay.
At any rate, this issue is similar to what TCG collectors deal with. You end up with hundreds of useless cards collecting dust.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
I only recently purchased my first two cases - both 1/12 full cases. I rarely like a full case, so I just go straight to eBay once a new series is released and I only like a few of the mini's in that series. I would hate getting a duplicate, it would feel like such a waste of money. But I guess I can see the thrill in possibly getting a 1/72 or 1/144.

Stop it, Craig! How are you liking them? They are (by far) my favorite mini's. The size, the scultps and the details are amazing! I'm crossing my fingers that there's another series in the future.

Besides eBay is there anywhere else that you can purchase sealed cases? I dipped my foot in for the Avengers AOU series, bought 10 boxes between Target( only bought the one that felt like a rock inside), B&N, and cleared out the last 6 at my local Hot Topic. I got 10 different ones, so I was happy to get no dups. I think I am going to just try to pick up the remaining few on eBay rather than push my luck.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
It really depends for me. If I want the entire series then I love 1:12 sets. However, even with 1:12 sets I still get duplicates when looking for a particular figure out of the series. With the how to train your dragon series I must have pulled 4 Astrids out of the random 10 I've bought and still no Toothless even though there's a 1 in 4 chance of pulling any of the Toothless figures in an untouched case.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
I love the 1/12 sets like the Garbage Pail Kids set. In fact, it's the only full set I've bought. I've bought a couple GOT minis at a show and a loose Batgirl one time. I just can't urge myself to drop the scratch on the mystery sets but buying a full case and knowing I'm getting what I want in one fell swoop? That's the only thing I'll purchase at this point. Chase variants mixed with blind boxes just turns me off automatically.

I usually preorder a case from Entertainment Earth - (I would buy from Gemini but they don't always get MLP cases, or if they do not right away) Toywiz and BigBadToyStore also sell cases for comparable prices.

Well I must be by myself here, but I think the 1/12 are so boring. I have stopped buying them because I just don't like some of the minis. I Just got a 1/72 Ultron after 7 tries so that's not that bad. His neck is all screwed up though

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
Personally I only buy from sets that contain 1/144's. I hope all future Disney/Nightmare Before Christmas contain them as well.
I may pull them or I may not, it's definitely more fun to pull a 1/144 though and to have the possibility to pull them and I've pulled 7 of them from 3 different sets in just the last year and a half.
There's definitely nothing like buying 3 boxes from Barnes and Noble and opening them in the car and pulling 2 1/144's back to back.
I don't really care about completing the set though so having the rarest figures out there is cool on it's own.

Re: Are one in 12 sets no fun
Honestly I started collecting minis for the Chase, and the possibility of pulling something unique/valuable. I also weigh all my figures before and after opening so once i get a solid set I know which boxes to buy. However, packaging weight seems to vary significantly between boxes (sometimes) and the uniquely painted variants (bloody walking dead or dragons in GoT) are the same weight and it's just luck to pull the Chase figures. However weighing has guaranteed that chance at a figure you still need or identifying figures you don't have. It has worked well for me except in walking dead.... I think I have 8 regular micchones, 5 regular governors, 4 regular glenns, and 4 regular hershels. Weighing did however identify the figure it was just hard to determine if they were the Chase figure but I happen to think I'm just unlucky with walking dead set as I finished the game of thrones series 2 much faster using this method.
