That's very subjective. Can be different for everyone. Could be how hard you searched for it, or the cost they demand, rarity. Many different variables but also different to each person's collection

I think it’s super subjective and depends on the person, some might be price others it’s just the piece for example my grail is the Funko HQ Kevin Smith just because I am such a huge fan and this was the most limited Kevin pop and I was finally able to get it :)

A grail is any piece that you absolutely must have (or, at least, really really wish you could have) and isn't easily available because of its rarity or cost.

Whatever you want it to be. I think it should be something you've been dying to get forever and can't seem to get your hands on. Many think its based on price. I think they're wrong.

I think it is a combination of piece count, how old it is, where you had to go to get it, and what you had to do to get it.

This is very good answer. I think for companies and all it seems to be something vaulted and hard to obtain. Value usually $50 at least but mostly over $100, mega being the $300 and up.

But for me it is a must-have have piece that I need in my collection or that will take time and connections to find and get.

I just think it’s a piece you want in the collection pretty badly. Most of us would say a grail is based on piece count or cost - for example, my current most wanted grails are Freddy as He-Man and Skeletor, and Fozzie Bear - but I have seen really amazing commons announced and consider them insta-grail. I remember thinking that about the Ellie Pop from The Last of Us.
Please Funko make Taylor Swift Pops!

Most wanted non-Taylor Pops: Carson Teva, Naru from Prey, The Last of Us TV show

For some it’s something very hard to get. For others it can be a piece that costs x or a piece that has a low LE count. It can even be something that you really like regardless of cost or rarity.

I think the term is widely overused within the community, as grails are a very subjective term. Of course, the term is generally used to describe a Pop/collectible that "everyone" wants and is very valuable on the 3rd-party market.

I, however, think "grail" refers to a Pop/collectible that has significant meaning to you. Expensive or inexpensive. Extremely limited or widely available. It holds a special place in your heart.

I have two grails in my life. My Golden Master Chief from Halo 4 (Blockbuster exclusive) and Dragonite from Pokemon.

A piece that is must have, can’t live without, that is both limited in number, and not easily attained! I remember one of my first Pop grails being the gold jacket chase Elvis..seemed like it took a couple years to even find one up for grabs but when I found it, I was ready no matter the cost!! So many Wobbler grails out there, which keeps it interesting!!

On a personal scale it comes down to a rare item that personally makes me happy.

In terms as grail as an overall collectible it comes down to availability and number of people that love that.

Thus why Some Le300 items sell for less than le480 pieces
Current collection count is over 5000 unique pieces.

For me a “Grail” is a Pop within my fandom that is just beyond my reach. I have to have it but its just not attainable yet. I started collecting Funko. In 2017 so much of what I want came out before that, making it that much harder to obtain.. For instance my grails are The OG Thundercats line, the OG He-man line, GITD TMNT four pack, or anything TMNT before 2017!! My mega grails are the Flocked Lion-O, the regular Lion-O, Freddy as He-Man, Freddy as Skeletor, Disco Metallic Skeletor, GITD Skeletor, Toys R Us 36inch Freddy..

All in all it varies from funatic to funatic. Its what you deem valuable to your collection.

But valuable doesn't mean money either. It can be a piece that has a strong sentimental attachment to it.

I would describe a grail as a personal achievement that you have acquired; this could mean, price, value, rarity, or just genuine enjoyment of the collection and hunt for said item :compress: \:D/

I agree. My wife's first big win was a Taika Waititi Pop on the Funko site with a quick sellout. She would never sell or trade it.

Traditionally a Funko Grail is something that you have always wanted to add to your collection, which mostly meant it was hard to find or rare. Value wasn't always a top factor.

In today's collecting world, it seems like anything that peaks over $150 is considered a grail. It's currently a very loose term that people have obscured to flip stuff.

For sure! My biggest takeaway is that it’s basically subjective. I have seen for sale posts that list the item as a “grail” but I was curious of how that was determined.

In general, I'd take 3 factors into what makes a certain Pop a "grail" - scarcity, unique/cool design, and popularity of the line/character

I agree with others that grail is subjective. For me, it's something that I've wanted for a long time and is usually at a high price. Two of my personal grails are the blue SDCC Cheshire Cat and the Cheshire Cat in the tea cup. They are both expensive and I've wanted them for quite awhile.

I would say supplier and demand but also personal preference. I might find one as a grail to where you see it as a common. :freddy3:

I think a grail is a three-fold thing.

1. That it's very hard to get.
2. That it's at least a few years old.
3. That it has a prestige or lore to it.

The literal definition is something that is eagerly pursued or sought after. If enough people are pursuing or seeking the same item, then the demand outweighs the supply, which increases the price. Grails are definitely pieces that we must have in our collections, but there is also a correlation between these grails and values. The value will increase more as the demand increases, and that's what makes mega grails.

Think of it in the literal sense. The Holy Grail, the Fountain Of Youth, the Ark Of The Covenant. Highly desirable and even more highly costly. Your grail is whatever’s worth the money and the energy. Your treasure of all treasures. Mine for example being the Contest Of Champions Howard proto because it’s the only one I’m still missing. Everybody’s got one. Maybe even a few. lol

Not to disagree with the majority of posts in response to the question, but...

I think a grail is something that a lot of other people want, but not a lot of people have....it has to be something sought after and coveted by others.

If it's just an item that you love, that's totally cool, but I think that might be your "favorite" or maybe, because of how hard it was for you to get it, could be referred to as your "personal grail."

Just an opinion....
