There are usually 3-10 protos made for each piece. They very in color, color combinations, and sometimes have variations in the sculpts/designs. Some protos are also hand painted, or include hand painted elements. In general, the all white protos are usually the rarest.

Funko Gives out protos on this site via contests, at Funko sponsored events or gatherings such as Fundays, San Diego Comic Con, Funko Fundays Out, etc and via Gemmini. Sometimes protos are put up for charity auctions run by Funko.

You can also find protos available on ebay often, or in the Sale & Trade forum.

Many of us consider the protos to be highly desirable and rare and focus our collections on them.

It's also really important to establish lineage when you receive a proto (pictures of it at the event with you in the shot, receipts of purchase if from a store, conversation threads if you're trading or buying from someone individually, any way to create a paper trail, etc.), and to confirm lineage if you're buying from someone.

Unfortunately there's fakes/"scrappers" out there that folks try to pass off as authentic.

Truthfully, I had never thought of doing that, but you are right, with the possibility of fakes and/or scappers, you should do this with your proto. Except for my first Fundays I have swag from all my other Fundays, but I usually hang on to my protos.

I have a couple protos that I've exclusively gotten from Fundays in the past and this year, when I got one that wasn't really fitting for my collection, I tried to do some trades and even posted on eBay and I got such a hard time for not having a picture of myself with it at Fundays. I didn't realize how important "lineage" was and that many people won't buy/trade without it. I even had pics of all my Fundays swag and some of the other pops I got and people were suggesting that maybe I just bought all of it elsewhere so I could peddle fake protos... lol. I can appreciate wanting to ensure authenticity but some people were really taking it too far.

I get it about the lineage. It is a fine line between something really cool and rare and something like looks kinda cool but is just industrial waste. With the dollar amounts we are dropping on protos we really want to make sure we can reliably trace them through to the source. The while scrappers thing is super sad IMO.
