Religion Line?

Postby Mankatoman22 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 1:16 am

Anyone think Funko will ever make a line of religious characters? I bet they would sell pretty good. Lots of people need that Jesus pop lol.

Lolz. I would love it if they did. I just don't think Funko will. Unfortunately, I think it could bring them more controversy.

They were going to make a Pope pop a few years back but I believe other than a few Wobblers, the Pops & Collectormates (Hikari-ish) were never seen other than at Toy Fair that year.

The Pope, not so bad. But I don't think it's a good move for Funko to get into religious figures for Pops. Buddy Christ is a good example of why it shouldn't be done. From some thinking it could be a mockery, to some religions being left out completely. Someone taking something the wrong way, and Funko will be in some very hot water. In my workplace, we we have the phrase, "No religion, and no politics." Because no matter how you slice it and dice it, there can and will, be heated debates that could spell out trouble.

Def would love it but I think it would raise too many issues. Not sure if Funko being a publicly traded company would put them selfs out there like that. Good thought though

Just as stated in the write-up, these were not going to be mass produced..it was all for the Philippines only with exception to the Wobblers. The edition size of the Pope pop was set to be only 200pcs, with no additional releases set in other regions. All or a portion of the money was also going to be used for charity, so it was with positive intent as well.

Correct, that sample is the only one ever seen, and it might have been a hand painted sample, so even less chance these were even at the factory to have gotten out.

Ultimately I don’t even know if they were actually released over there. Never seen a one surface.

Can confirm that the Pope Pop (supposedly thru the Pop Asia line) was never released here (in the Philippines) ever.

The bobble-head was released though, but it’s not Funko.

Collectormates (which looks like Hikaris from afar), was never released as well, and it is also not Funko.

Hope this helps! :)

Am with you on this one. There will just be too much unnecessary issues if they ever decide to release this hypothetical line.

Just stick to the Pop Cultural icons and we will be fine! :D

It'd be cool if they did a line of highly fictionalized religious figures like the Greek or Egyptian gods. I know those are still religious figures but have fallen more into popularized mythology now. Still could be dicey though.

Very risky, unfortunately. I doubt Funko would get near the subject in such sensitive times.

I agree, when it comes to religion it can really burn an audience. Some are mad because they made a figure of someone, didn't make one, or feel that they are showing one religion to much love. Sounds dumb but I could almost guarantee there would be issues.

I agree with most people that it wouldn’t be a smart idea to get into a religious figure line. On the other hand, I would like to see a mensch on the bench pop for us Jews. Also, maybe the Rugrats from the Hanukkah or Passover special.
