Saw the Silver Surfer concept today. If it's real, I'm blown away and need it. This whole line is so quietly one of the best.

You are correct, found the issue where they took him out and it's exactly as you described. But apparently (and I knew I remembered seeing this image somewhere before), there was a variant cover (a 2nd printing cover of #5 of the first series) of him holding his head and I think that is the idea for the pop and I conflated that with being in the story but it wasn't. *whew* Glad that's solved cuz it was bugging me, haha.
