Jiangshi, TMNT, TWD, Ghostbuster photos

Postby case » Fri Sep 19, 2014 2:33 am

I have been trying to capture the glow on figures, and was wondering what other folks use to capture the glow. For the moment I am just using a small box with some dark paper in it as a set. I am using a Nikon D3200 at 5.3 on "Time" with an ISO of 100, with a tripod and remote. The exposure as anywhere from 3-5min, but it probably doesn't need that much time to pick up the glow and ambient light. Next up is some light painting.

You can buy a black light for pretty cheap. This gives a stronger glow. You can also use it while shooting. Hold it, move it around. Even brings out cool colors on some toys that are non-glow when shot under black light.

I haven't done a glow shot in a long time but here is my set...

Why use such a small aperture?? Do you have anything bigger?

Yeah if you open the aperture more, you could probably bump up the ISO. Especially if you are leaving the shutter open for so long, a higher ISO would probably benefit you.

Nice work Saint! I have been meaning to pickup a black light and try it out.

naisatoh wrote:Why use such a small aperture?? Do you have anything bigger?

I was using f8-f10 and sampling shots and decided to to wider and open to try and capture more light. I haven't tried going bigger than f5.3 yet. For some reason on my camera if I have it on manual the widest I can go is 5.3 so maybe I have to look at some settings or maybe changes lens as the range says I should be able to get to f3.5-22.

I use to shoot with superia reala 100 and always liked that ISO so I haven't tried the other speeds, but I think I will give it a shot.

Also, going to try and look for some small micro leds for light painting.

The maximum aperture size is dependent on your zoom. You should be able to get down to f3.5 if you're completely zoomed out.

Got my hands on some dry ice and was trying some stuff out. I will probably have to change up settings to get a better effect with the fog.

Took more photos before the dry ice totally evaporated, used different light sources and multiple settings. Mostly, test shots until I find a proper setting to take more pics. Eventually, I will get a blacklight to try with fog.

Thanks Kevinbuddha! I am having fun with these and probably need to find a proper model/hobby shop for some decent props.

Some more walking dead and this time I tried a blacklight. I also got a fogger from walmart but I advise using it outside lol! After a few burst of smoke I set off one of the alarms when I turned the fan on to disperse it.1749617495174941749317492174911749017489174881748717486174851748417483174821748117480174791747817477

You can go on ebay and buy a laser, it will be like 6 bucks total and they will permanently glow brighter after some exposure to the beam, it's pretty cool to do because the beam makes them glow even in daylight.

I got my lasers of newegg, but use them in moderation until I have the proper eyewear. They were about $6-$8 on newegg as well.
