The protos look so different from other protos. I am scared I will purchase a fake as a majority of them are on ebay.

I would love to grab a freddy hikari proto or megazord.

Why are Megazords so popular?!?!

If you buy a proto off eBay, you can be pretty sure that its a fake/scrapper, especially if it comes from China...

Production line reject or after hours mold pull from the factory in China. They are common on eBay for all sorts of toy lines. Something gets rejected for a quality flaw, it's suppose to be scrapped but often they find their way to eBay on the cheap. Sometimes factory workers will run a batch after hours so they are technically bootlegs but using the official molds in the process.

There are definitely protos. Just confirm with the seller where they got them from and see the previous listings. Chances are if they have limited exclusives, they were at an event to get lucky for them

Spotted this at Frank and Sons a few months back but forgot to share it. Kinda laughed to myself once I looked it up to verify its just the normal piece missing a box.

I haven't seen many legit hikari protos. I know a handful of people have real ones, but the majority of them were scrappers from ebay.

Wish I had read this thread before I purchased a Hikari Prototype on eBay in the last week. Turns out that the same seller sold 4 other "Prototypes" of the exact same release to other buyers before me. It's a Batman that the ad claims it is a Prototype of the 2014 SDCC Exclusive Batman Hikari. So including mine, that's 5 "Prototypes" this seller had available and who knows how many more he's got. DANG IT!!!!!! Oh well, it was cheap, so I can't complain too much. It was going to be my first and now I feel like I've been jilted.

File a claim and provide some proof and Ebay will side with you! :thumbleft: I once had the same issue with a counterfeit wacky wobbler and Ebay helped me through it after I opened the case.

I'm not going to sweat it. It was $8 plus shipping. It looks pretty cool and I would not have known anything, if not for reading this thread. Thank you for the info about your experience and what the steps to resolution were.

The nice thing is, hikari prices are very reasonable on eBay. So it's not too bad playing catch up.

Honestly, I'd assume hikari protos are not legit unless you received it at an event or are 100% certain of the source being from an event...or...you received it from gemini or funko itself.

That pop-up gallery was such an awesome off-site experience. It's what got me into collecting Hikari in the first place.

Bummed that we will most likely never see the likes of it again.

In theory anything mass produced with a mold will have some prototypes as they test the mold, the plastics and the engineering of the figure. What we consider prototypes are mostly just test shots from a new mold.

Just not many are as coveted, sought after and distributed like Funko does. Most wind up in a Chinese factory bin or corporate office dumpsters. Back in the 90's I knew a guy who knew a guy who used to raid the Toy Biz office dumpsters for 5" Marvel test-shots/prototypes.
