Protos are the vinyl figures that are first through the mold. Typically made to test the molds and and get final approvals from licence holders.

How many are there?

Typically there will be 2 white protos and 4-5 colors for any given mold.

Where can I get them?

Gemini Collectibles and Fugitive Toys are the most reliable places as both receive them direct from Funko. They are also tossed out at Fundays events and can be purchased from collectors.

How to know if it's legit?

The sad fact is there are people out there trying to scam protos. One way is by trying to pass off a scrapper as one. Scrappers are pieces Funko throws away because they have flaws that prevent it from being sellable. Typically these are sold on ebay from a seller based in China. Others will strip a piece and try to sell it as a proto. In this case you can usually see paint residue along the seams or acetone will pit and scar the vinyl. Note: There is no COA for protos.

Is it really worth it?

Like with any purchase only you can answer that. Those of us who have them, love them.
