Would anyone else just prefer the minis to not be Blindboxed

Great things come in mysterious miniature or pint sized packages, but which great thing will it be? It's all a mystery until you open one. Then the fun begins.

Would anyone else just prefer the minis to not be Blindboxed

Postby Pocketmego » Sun Aug 03, 2014 3:01 am

I was watching a video unboxing the Guardians Minis blindboxes and thinking of the upcoming Scifi series and it occurred to me. I used to kind of like Blind boxes and blind bags, but my tolerance just isn't there anymore. Do I really want to go through 4 Leatherface minis to get to an Ash or a Video Game Jason? Or am I just thinking, a nicer Window box like MY POPS IS SO MUCH LESS OF A PAIN IN THE BUTT.

I know Blind packaging has its place and can be charming, but maybe I'm just becoming too much of a crotchety old man. I see a blindbox and think...yeah for like 3 dollars more I can just buy a pop I don't have and know exactly what I'm getting.

What's the consensus on this?

Love the thrill of blind boxes.

I'll admit that I do like the 12 figures/1 of each in a case though.

I love blind boxes, however those chase ones are a pain. I did like what they did with SDCC this year and had some of the harder to get minis in a lower rarity. I finally picked up a Thanos but wasn't able to find Ultron, their pose doesn't matter to me.

I think Funko is already addressing you by making all the new waves of blindboxes 1/12. That way people who enjoy the hunt can still have their cake, and those who just want a set can buy a case and it's done. I think it's perfect like that.

I own all the Marvel and DC minis and it was beginning to drive me crazy too.

And also I should apologize to FUNKO (tears) because I was complaining how they were repeating characters for the Marvel SDCC minis. That was not the truth and I'm glad to see the differences now.

Prefer the blind boxes. I grew up collecting cards and the thrill of opening a pack and not knowing who you would get inside... blind boxes have the same type of rush. You might end up with eight Zapdos Pokemon cards before you get a Charizard, twenty Geno Smith cards before a Aaron Rodgers or multiple leatherface before you get Ash as you mentioned above. All part of the thrill of the chase.

If you don't want to end up with 4 duplicates, buy the whole case of 12. :D

I like blind boxes. It's fun to try and guess/hope what might be inside. Typically, I buy blind boxes until I get dupes, then go to ebay or check the sales threads.

I like the thrill of opening blinds, but after i pull dupes I revert to buying them open alternatively. And I can't afford to buy a case at a time, or else I would to get the figures I wanted.

I'm a baseball card collector and half the fun is not knowing what you are going to get. I love the blind boxes because of this. Of course it is frustrating when you get 3 or 4 of the same mini, but pulling a 1/72 or 1/144 makes up for that in my opinion.

Yes and no

With the Game of Thrones In Memoriam minis I wanted ONLY Renly.
I've bought 6 boxes so far and still no Renly

I like the thrill but it's also frustrating when I just want one and I can't seem to get it

The rest of the lines though I've been happy with all the ones I've gotten

That may not be accurate, the HT cases always have the exclusives which in turn takes out ones that would be in normal cases so you might only be missing a few.

Personally I like them. Unlike basically every other thing I collect that is currently in stores, me getting a rare doesn't imperatively depend on me getting to the case within 60 seconds of it being opened before everything is picked clean by scalper scum. I know it's not EVEN and I'm sure somebody more mathematically inclined could show us lots of numbers on it but I feel that relatively I stand the same chance as anybody else to pick up a rare mini when I approach a box regardless of how many are in it and where it is.
Yes, buying dupes get annoying. I think I've got at least a dozen dupes chasing Drogon from GoT, even worse is I've gotten about half a dozen dupes of the other dragons (I'm about to where I can tell when I find a dragon). I guess if you really hate the blind boxes just ebay them. You'll pay more but relatively if you account for buying dupes or the investment of buying cases, it's probably not that much more money in the long run.
I really like the collector/rush feel from buying blind boxes. You can shake them but unless you're better at it than me you don't have more of a general idea of what you're getting. In a sense I like that, especially when I start a new series and I have no idea what I"m getting but am happy either way.

Great responses here. I'd probably go the case route in the future. Although, it would have to be an investment of something I'd want a whole series of. Especially if Funko is meeting us halfway with smaller case assortments these days. :compress:

I collected Disney Vinylmation blind boxes before Funko. Though my love and focus has totally shifted I miss the thrill of always blind boxing. I know I'm not eligible quite yet, but is the mystery mini trade really active here? If so, I would be really into the minis.

If minis were window boxed, I'd only buy the select few that I really want and wouldn't have the incentive for completing a set that I do from getting lots of blind boxes.

One thing I see that Funko minis do better than Disney Vinylmation is character selection. For instance, in Disney mini series 2, you have Simba, Wall-e, Belle, Timon to name a few. In Vinylmation, you'd never have all those characters in one series and they'd be broken up into a Lion King series, Beauty and the Beast series, Pixar series and so forth.

I like them because of the thrill. Hunting a chase and finding it. However, it gets old really fast when you end up with tons of dupes and can't sell them. I've learned to get a case immediately to get a chase, sell off the extras immediately before everyone gets them and buy the chase pieces later when the price goes down. I got bloody leatherface for $20 and glow well walker for 10.
Patience is key.

I haven't tried to collect more than a couple before disney series two. It's kinda fun to open them not knowing what they will be, but the disappointment of not getting what you want is not worth it sometimes. But it's nice to be able to trade and buy off of other collectors.

For me, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I do love getting the blind boxes and the thrill of the hunt. But I'm also a very unlucky person in games of chance so I never get the chase figures and I always get doubles. My best chases have come from either getting lucky at a random store (like when I got an open Kidrobot Hedonismbot for $10) or from buying online for a good price. So like when I went to a store and bought 4 boxes of sets I was going for a handful of items and got all duplicates, I felt like I just threw money in the toilet.

I LOVE blind boxes! I'm a trading card collector and a gambler by nature. I love the thrill of not knowing what I'm going to get and finally hitting a rare one makes up for multiple duplicates in my opinion and makes my collection that much more special.

Since I purchase them individually on eBay anyway, I'd probably prefer them to be unblinded. It would make it easier to pick up all the ones I want from one seller, but they would probably be much less popular, and fewer sellers would bother eBaying them (which again means no minis for me), so it's a double-edged sword.

But then you wouldn't have much of a chance with the chase variants... It's harder finding a chase if anyone can see it and pick it out of a case.

Way back in the late 1990s (I think), I bought a few kozik blind boxes and I was bored with them after opening 3 and finding the same exact character. I have not bought any since.

I love blind boxes. :) I buy random boxes here and there of lines that I like, it's ok if I don't collect them all. (As long as it's not Hello Kitty. I bought a case of the HK mystery minis and got the few that I did not get in the case off of Ebay to complete the set). I have gotten burned at times, I mean who really needs 4 Robin Domos?? But mostly it's fun.

Personally I love the blind boxes. I have really good luck with mystery minis, I bought the last 4 Disney Series 2 Mystery Minis from Hot Topic and pulled the 1/144 Timon. Then a little while later I bought some DC Mysery Minis from Go! and got the sitting Batman. Funny enough my first 8 DC Mysery Minis were all Batmans...
But I bought 4 from Barnes and Noble a couple days ago and my 8th was the sitting Batman again and the 9th was the arms outstretched old Joker, I couldn't believe it getting 2 1/144 minis from the same store.
