Gears of War mystery minis (first look!)

Great things come in mysterious miniature or pint sized packages, but which great thing will it be? It's all a mystery until you open one. Then the fun begins.

Well, thought I'd get to take a break on minis, guess not. Hope this is a sign we will get resident evil minis as well.

Awesome! I was a little confused when these were first discussed, but these look amazing! I'm going to need a case of these. Also the Gold Cog, or Bling Carmine, or whatever he'll be called.

Huh, some really interesting case ratios here.

10 1/12 characters, 2 1/24, and 3 1/36. So 2 rare slots per box.

I don't really understand the thinking behind making Marcus 1/24, but otherwise, the ratios work for me. Probably just grabbing Carmine/COG soldier in all three variations and Marcus. But I'm hoping for a Trashball Cole exclusive at Gamestop or HT! :D

Yeah, it's weirdly similar to Walking Dead series 4 with Rick as a 1/24 along with the two rares.

Is Gears big enough that both gamestop and hot topic would get exclusives? GameStop is pretty much a given.

No clue if they'd both get exclusives. It's wishful thinking on my part, based partially on the dual exclusives for the latest Fallout set. But Gear is Microsoft's second biggest franchise (behind Halo), so I think it'd probably have the juice to make it happen.

I've never been the guy to order a full case of minis but these and the X-Men are VERY tempting. Who do you die-hard mini collectors recommend ordering from?

The last two I'm guessing are just cog soldiers not carmine's. Clayton Carmine is the one on top.

GameStop had just put out a fresh case right out of shrink wrap - I went to another store and found that the layout worked although I got duplicate 1/24 and 1/36 - so not sure if there are multiple layouts yet. Chases are kind of lame on this set - just variations in color :D

I think the layout at my GS has either been messed with or it's a different one.

Kait is noticeably lighter than everyone else right? She was top middle right in the case I looked at.

You can disregard the previous message, I was able to hold out for almost a whole day before going back. The guy confirmed that they shift all their boxes around to combat the scalper menace.

I shook a few, wound up with a heavier one that didn't move as much around. I got the glowing orange pouncer!

Scalper menace? You mean smart people who don't want to waste money on dupes. Any store that rearranges boxes is scum and ruins the fun of minis. Sure they are a mystery, but no one who collects them would prefer the mystery, unless they have $ to waste.

I think you're going a tad overboard there. If Funko wanted people to know what they were buying from the case, then they wouldnt be packaged in blind boxes.

I should have used quotes, those were his direct words on why they mix boxes around. It's a tad annoying because I don't think this store even has anybody who really takes from their boxes for their rates. I think they just assume if you don't take the front two, you were cheating or something.

The lay out definitely works - I've been my own test subject. Congrats on orange pouncer. That's all I need to complete this set until they release a store exclusive (if that happens)

I think the blind Box is a gimmick developed overseas. Some buy impulsively and don't even know/care about layouts. Collectors don't want to waste $ on dupes, so use a layout. Mixing boxes screws everyone. Then we are forced to shake and try to feel for what's in the box, damaging the box, to avoid wasting $ on a dupe.

Sorry, this is just an important issue as the layout is essential to the minis success. True random boxes will send a lot of collectors to the secondary market or they may stop collecting, or buy less. Mixing boxes is a shady business practice as they may get a sale from someone who believes it is an untouched box, whom otherwise wouldn't buy. That person will be apprehensive about going to the same store again.

Sorry for rant. Got all the ones I needed today, someone already got the 1/36 spot so will have to keep hunting for the pouncer. Great details on these figures too, best ones yet IMO.

Just talk to the employees at the stores you go to - it should be pretty easy to see when the employees switch the boxes around (I spotted it with the Harry Potter minis, noting that a box that should have been a tiny animal weight was a heavy one).
