Problem with yellowing white paint?

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got a spring. Come inside and chat about Funko Wacky Wobblers (bobble heads, for the less sophisticated).

Problem with yellowing white paint?

Postby sclarke03 » Wed Apr 08, 2015 3:19 pm

I recently discovered that the white jacket of my El Diablo Freddy wobbler has become noticeably more yellow since I obtained it a couple of years ago. Just wondering if anyone else has run into the same or similar problem, and if there are any possible solutions for restoring it to it's former color? I haven't removed this from the box yet, I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this before trying things out.

This isn't the best picture, but the eyes and teeth are notably brighter than the jacket.

Mine's the same way, Steve. But I display out of box behind glass doors. It's also slightly sticky (typical of some wobblers). Perhaps it wasn't pure white to begin with. I have 2 white 2008 Tux Freddys and a 2012 B&W and they are all bright white and not sticky.

I have an off-white proto that is pretty yellow now and also sticky. I thought it was weird when I found my first sticky wobbler. I literally ripped it off its base trying to pull it out of the box. I tried leaving it outside, near the heater, near the A/C...nothing! It was still extremely sticky

You can wash the sticky off. It's the goop they use to make the PVC flexible and it leaches out of the plastic. Use Dawn liquid soap and magic eraser to remove it. Test that you don't take the paint off when you do.

I cleaned up a Shadow Monkey Assassin and Pop set that way.

Thanks for this detailed info. :pooh: Haven't noticed this on my Funko products, but I did have this exact problem on one of my KR 8" Dunny. The stickiness caught me off guard. I shall try your suggestions :D.

First try the Dawn dishwash detergent. Then, if needed and If unpainted, for sticky (and yellowed) protos I put a drop of Softscrub with bleach (one product) on a wet sponge. Scrub gently. Leave on for a few minutes. I also use an old toothbrush to get into nooks an crannies. Use Magic eraser as needed.

It's possible that it was already starting to yellow when I got it, but didn't appear to be as noticeable in a 2011-2012 photo that I compared it to. My tux Freddy doesn't seem to have the same problem, either.

What everyone else said about the soap and magic eraser. I have many, many all white protos that I have to clean on a yearly basis to remove the sticky yellow crap. I call it Proto goo.

Unfortunately this is quite common with mostly all toy collectibles that are plastic. I used to collect 70's/80's action figures in their original blisters and yellowing of white area's on figures was quite common and annoying! The Remco Karate kid line is a good example. All white Daniel Lerusso would quite commonly turn yellow. Not much that can be done when they "turn".

I wonder if it changed color due to it being displayed with direct or indirect sunlight hitting it.

I think it maybe the kind of paint they use, since is only happening to one figure and not to every white one.

My guess is it's a change in the chemical compound of the plastic and you won't be able to go back.

There are tutorials on brightening white plastic toys. Basically, put the toy in a jar of hydrogen peroxide and put it in the sun for a couple of days. Personally, I think it might damage other parts of the toy, but you can watch videos online and see if you're brave enough to try this out.
