Hikari protos

Postby slim1977 » Thu Apr 06, 2017 9:04 pm

I'm just wondering, are there legitimate protos for hikari? There is a hikari proto on eBay that I am interested in, but I am hesitant being that I have never really seen any sold in the past.

I have seen some genuine protos, but eBay is so flooded with scrappers I would exercise great caution in buying.
Hope you find a real proto you want!

Mine came directly from MINDstyle so legitimate pieces are out there although, I suspect, greatly outnumbered by scrappers

That's good to know that there are some legit ones out there. EBay is a frightening place to shop for protos, but especially for hikari.

Steer clear of Batman that's the number 1 offender in the scrapper proto game! Like others have said they are few and far between but there are legitimate-straight from Mindstyle protos out there.

Holy cow!!! The pictures in this post!!

I am amazed at the number of scrapper pieces on eBay. It seems that they have started pricing certain pieces higher as well. I guess they are learning what people will pay. I wish nobody would support the scappers so they didn't have a market.

These are my Astro Boy one, white one on top and clear glitter one in the middle of the bottom row (in the box), both from MindStyle the only two Astro Boys I've ever seen. I've since sent the white to an Astro Boy/Funko collector friend.

Wow the clear protos look absolutely fantastic! There's something rather nice about seeing them blank and unpainted like that. I'm rather jealous of everyone who's managed to find one of those, but equally I'm very happy to see that people have been able to pick them up.

(Is it terrible that this is making want to pick up another molecular Iron Man to wipe and repaint into something that highlights the transparency of the underlying vinyl? Wanders off pondering which paint solvent would be safe to use on one of these guys, and where to pick up appropriately insane paints... Something like Alclad II - but actually appropriate for vinyl...)

I love my Scrapmen! But yeah, they're total dumpster dives. Like Huse's turtles, I'm only into them for about 15 bucks a piece, max.

If you're looking on ebay, check closed sales. The ones you see over and over and over again are crap..

The nice thing is, hikari prices are very reasonable on eBay. So it's not too bad playing catch up.

Lacquer thinner kinda works, but not really good enough. I need to try the vinyl-paint thinner I got recently.

No prototypes for me, but scrappers are loads of fun for custimization or display, just don't pay too much. I don't think I've gone over $10 shipped. Poor glitter distribution is the most common 'defect' I've seen, but bubbles are pretty common too. But if you go in knowing that, and have a low price ceiling, I'd say go for it.

Protos though! That's a world I can't afford.

For the most part, legitimate protos always demand more than the production piece. The amount just varies depending on the character.

Hah - yeah I'm not even sure how I'd even begin to hunt down a proto from this side of the pond.

A wipe and a repaint though? That sounds like fun. Especially since the paintjob on one of my untouched Hikaris isn't actually all that impressive up close... I've got to admit I was wondering if a quick swipe with pure acetone would do the trick, you can even get away with acetone on plastics that it will definitely melt if you've a delicate enough touch with it - and well, being vinyl theoretically acetone would 'only' shrink a Hikari even if it took a prolonged dunk (not that I'd actually try that). I'd need to get my hands on a spare first though before I'd be willing to risk it!

So far the only Hikari's I've fallen in love with is the Megazords. I have yet to see the proto's for them but I'm still hopeful.
