Proto vs Artist Proof, which do you prefer?
Hi all,
I recently picked up my very first AP or artist proof Rocksteady and was thrilled to have my very first AP. Then it really started to dawn on me that they hold similar rarity as protos, but are just more closer to production then Protos. Please note that in no way am I trying to insinuate that one is better than the other, obviously it depends on who prefers what and what you collect, so to each there own. So please no bashing here as Id like to make this as a topic to discuss and share, which do you prefer to have in your collection a Proto or an Artist Proof?
Personally only having an Artist Proof piece and no proto, this is special to me and the one I prefer. Maybe that will change, but I hope one day to get this piece signed by the CoF Mike Becker himself, as I intend to keep this piece.

I've gotten an AP soda before and have never gotten a Proto yet so I'd like to have a Proto.

The most likely place to get them is through Funko giveaways during cons and of course, through social media.

I would love either. But a Proto I think stands out more, but I would not hate on a good AP soda.

Ahh I see. I've gotten a Danger Mouse Soda still sealed that was given away at a Con.
I just opened it to see if it was an AP. It was not, but it ended up being the chase.

Re: Proto vs Artist Proof, which do you prefer?
Have we got a clear cut idea on how many AP's there are per Soda?
For Hikari there seem to be a significant number of AP's (10+) so they really don't change the value of the item. To the blind eye you can't tell if a Soda or Hikari is an AP so I definitely prefer prototypes since it is more obvious. The idea of AP's is cool, but for me personally it's hard to get behind because you can't really tell the difference.

Re: Proto vs Artist Proof, which do you prefer?
There is way more AP sodas (like Caseyjones14 said, just like Hikaris). I have spoken to vendors that do get sodas in and they get multiple AP sodas. That does not happen that way with regular protos. Seems to be an item made for Funko to hand out to licensors and for prizes etc. Its a different lane than protos but its also way more rare than the productions pieces. Some you cannot tell the diff between the two side by side, only by the Pog. Some you can actually see slight color variations which is cool. I have stayed way away from these just for the mere fact unless you can prove you received from Funko I am afraid the pogs can be replicated.

I have both but I’ll take protos any day. I do like colored protos over all white ones tho. They just look better to me.

In terms of rarity I would say Proto. A good AP is dependent on the design and color of the soda.

I prefer artist proof over a proto - I'm fairly certain that the APs are considered to be the "best versions" of the product before going to mass production. These are my only APs but Snow Miser is my favorite and being signed by Becker makes it all the more awesome.

Wow congrats!!
I was hoping to see Mike at SDCC 2023 in hopes to have him sign my AP as that would be the topping on the cake. But hey if I somehow end up with a Proto that trip that for sure will need to be signed by Mike.

Thats fair, just curious what makes a proto your desired choice? Not saying you had to choose AP, but curious as to whats everyones take on protos, number or protos, or number of APs, etc. that leads to their desire of one over the other. Dont get me wrong, I think all of us would agree if we were given either one or the other, we would all be grateful for them.

I had the same question. I see the pogs have the AP designation. I always wondered if they could be pulled like a Chase. Thanks for the answer.

I would personally prefer the proto over the AP, but I find AP’s to be fun as well!! AP’s of earlier funko items seem to be a little more rare than today’s items, but I totally understand always hunting for something extra

A difference in pog isnt enough to excite me. The vinyl figure itself doesnt look different than a main production piece.
Meanwhile a proto looks significantly different and the numbers on them seem to be established. I would choose this every time if i had the choice.

Re: Proto vs Artist Proof, which do you prefer?
Proto all the way ... not even a close race.
My favorite protos are
1. Pieces with special accessories (like the plastic visor on Speed Racer's helmet ... acquired)
2. Multi-colored pieces (like where the head is one color, the body is another color, etc.)
3. All white is not my preference, but I see where some collectors prefer them that way
I can see where APs are desired because they are considered something special. If I had a favorite Soda that I wanted a complete set of, I'd need to have Color Protos (all of the variations I could find), White Protos, and a set of APs for me to really consider the set complete. But I really don't have a deep desire to collect APs on their own.
A while back in a Facebook group, some collectors that shop at the Funko HQ store took a photo of them together with the APs that they got in the store that day "on the table". I don't remember the exact count, but there were somewhere around 6 chase APs and many Common APs of the same character.
I also remember being at the store with my son one time on vacation and finding the original soda bottles (from SDCC 2017) on the shelf. There were at least 60 CASES and they were all APs. We bought 3 cases of each.

I prefer a proto but APs are awesome in their own way. My friend mentioned that you can see differences in the paint jobs compared to the production piece. So it's definitely nice to receive either.
