Proto vs Artist Proof, which do you prefer?

Included with each SODA can is a 4.25” vinyl figure and a collectible disc both with a 1 in 6 chase variant!

So please no bashing here as Id like to make this as a topic to discuss and share, which do you prefer to have in your collection a Proto or an Artist Proof?

Personally only having an Artist Proof piece and no proto, this is special to me and the one I prefer. Maybe that will change, but I hope one day to get this piece signed by the CoF Mike Becker himself, as I intend to keep this piece.

Congrats Ferd on your pull. I think getting either, should bring smiles.

I personally enjoy the prototype because it shows where the physical product began. It sparks the imagination with it being a blank canvas. Also cool to see that they used colored vinyl more so than painting a lot of times. It’s just a neat process.

I don’t have either, but I would prefer a proto. With that said I definitely would not hate having an AP. Slight edge to the proto.

Protos because they look more distinct. I wish they came with a token like the APs, though.

I'll be happy to have any. I had no idea APs actually existed until recently. I'm selective with my soda purchases so it's a smaller part of my collection.

Exactly. I’m a huge fan of the pillsbury doughboy and other Funko pops that are mainly white but the protos I pass on.

I feel like AP was so hard to justify as having more value over the production Pop. I think Protos are more unique or one of one.

Both are very cool - I actually have no idea how you get AP soda - guessing it’s from giveaways. I prefer protos though I think just because there is more of a variety of fandoms.

The one thing that kinda bothers me about APs is we dont know how many are made, and if later they randomly decide to make more. I a little bit gun shy to collect then after I heard that Figpin can just make APs on demand and randomly change a pin to be an AP since its just a listing in a database that determines this.

That’s kind of disappointing to learn that about FigPin APs.

Proto all the way. APs are cool, but are they hand painted etc to differentiate themselves except for the POG?

feel a proto is more unique then an AP. With AP's from what i can tell it's just the coin that says the soda is an AP.

I prefer the proto's above AP's. But definately like to own an AP in the future, just because it is also an unique part of the production proces.

I honestly don't care which one it is, I just want to get something that I collect. I have bad luck and get the opposite of what I collect.

I don't have an AP soda so that would be cool.

Hopefully next up is a Soda Proto!

I've seen quite a few floating around. In fact, at NYCC Fright Night they were handing out Sodas to the attendees. I was fortunate enough to pull the Starlord ECCC or SDCC Soda. I traded it later that night for a Frodo Soda.

To answer the direct question. I would just depend on the piece. Multi colored protos are pretty neat. I haven't really seen or received an AP soda yet so my answer would be biased as a proto. ;-)

Proto, the Artist Proofs just don't appeal to me for some reason. Maybe because they aren't easy to tell apart without the pog?

Personally I prefer a proto. I have one that I received from Fundays, but with APs there could be 50 of them. Look at Figpin where there's about 50 APs of each pin. Crazy. I do own an AP SDCC stitch from last year and I did have a box set AP of Disney Villans, but I sold it off. Protos IMO are better and more exclusive than the APs.

Same! I always end up looking to trade the proto I got. Although one year I got Luke Skywalker and that couldn’t have been more perfect.

My daughter was called up to the stage at the Funko booth at Wondercon and she won a Soda. I didn’t realize that it was an AP. Thrilled to have one but I absolutely agree - Protos are a bit more of a wow.

How does one acquire an AP soda?

The most likely place to get them is through Funko giveaways during cons and of course, through social media.

So a grail hunt it is then.

Not sure how often but I’ve seen them given away on Funko Soda Saturday. I’m sure that’s not every winner but I’ve seen them won through there.
