Star Wars Retro Pops

Postby dragontree » Mon Jan 27, 2025 8:47 pm

Funko just announced their fourth wave of Star Wars Retro Pops — Boba Fett, Kylo Ren, Clone Trooper Fives, and Admiral Ackbar (Target exclusive)!

I love the colors of the Retro Pops (and their boxes), and this newest wave is no exception to that. However, I prefer my Pops to look more movie/show-accurate, so I tend to shy away from color variants like this, blacklight, chrome, etc. With the first two waves of this line, I was thinking this was more an homage to the retro Star Wars comics, but with the Phantom Menace wave and this most recent one, the Retro line seems more like a color variant line rather than a comic line (which could include Jaxxon!).

I will say I’m thrilled to finally see a Clone Trooper Fives Funko Pop, and I really hope Funko releases this character again as a non-Retro Pop! I’m also a big fan of the Retro Queen Amidala and Ben Kenobi, but wish those exact molds had also been released with standard paint jobs. There is precedent since that Retro Stormtrooper came out in 2021 and a standard paint job version came out in 2022!

What are everyone else’s thoughts on the line/this new wave?

Boba’s my favorite thus far. I don’t collect the retro ones either, but if they release any Ewoks in these designs I won’t hesitate to buy them.
Funko interests:
-Ewok Pops!
-Mortal Kombat Pops!
-TMNT sodas
-Funko tees

They look cool. I would say that Obi and Ackbar are my favorites so far based on the colors. :freddy3:

I think these look best out of box. I'm probably going for the Captain Rex and maybe the Ackbar (gametime decision on that one).

I'd love to see some Star Wars towns (and I'm shocked we haven't gotten any). Pick a movie, pick a scene. Lots of options here.

There is one. Yoda with his hut from Empire Strikes Back. It came out a couple years ago.

As a big Star Wars collector, these retro pops don’t really do much for me.

I think the retro paint jobs look cool. They’d be nice as a complete series for display.

People are already starting to get the newest wave in from Entertainment Earth. That's a crazy short time from announcement/pre-order to release.

Yes! And that probably makes more sense given that the cost would be considerably lower, and people really could "universe build" these together in a space-available sense.

I hope to see some bitty pops with this art style. I know it's a task but I think it'd be worth it in the end.

Oh, I’m not sure if you’ve seen this before, but last year for TargetCon 2024 Funko released a Retro style Princess Leia + T-Shirt bundle :)

Oh I like the idea of “universe building” them :) Funko’s already released a bunch of Bitty Pop Towns (SpongeBob with his house, Ollivander with his shop, etc) but no Star Wars ones yet. I’d be curious to see what they could come up with :)

Updating this thread to also include the BoxLunch exclusive Retro style Darth Vader that released with the latest wave. I think it’s interesting that the Star Wars Retro Pops were all Target exclusives from 2021-2024, but starting this year three are commons and at least this one is a BoxLunch exclusive!
