Are common pops still needed in today's collecting era?

Maybe it's a strange question, but I was thinking the other day about how Funko wants to lean more into exclusives and limited editions going forward and it made me think: What's the point in making common pops anymore? Most commons just sit as shelf warmers, and more companies are getting into the limited release style of production. Blind boxes are at a peak in popularity right now with different rarites and chase pieces to give collectors a thrill.

I got an awesome Big Bird pop the other day on clearance, and I love it, but I don't think I'd pay full retail for it knowing it's not a limited piece. Am I crazy for thinking that? Do other collectors feel the same way?

common is fine but common doesn't need to be synonymous with "infinite glut to cripple store shelves until they end up in a landfill". i've said it forever but every single pop should be limited, even the "common" ones.

Yes... they are needed but the quantities that were being made was the problem. They needed to do that to meet demand but with less people collecting now... cutting back production is a good idea

I think commons are important as it gives the brand shelf space, everything can’t be the hottest thing selling out all the time, but, also, doesnt mean shelves need to be stuffed with 60 of the same one

That's more what I was imagining as a solution too. Perhaps even made to order like the NFT pops were, although I'm not a fan of digital solutions that disregard physical retail. I like window shopping and seeing the different pops on shelves.

Yes, commons are needed because that makes limited edition styles/variations/chases part of the chase!

Love the common pops it helps being able to show the love for a pop out of box and to let new people in to the hobby with cheaper options don't get me wrong I love the limited drops and how they will keep the value but pops are also to show love for a show ,actor or movie and to get more characters they can't all be limited edition pops or it would take forever to release them all

There are too many characters out there to only have exclusives

Maybe not exclusives as in only at one retailer or only for one event. But a more limited production would be better, especially at the current price tag. If someone is spending $15 on a gift for someone, they might choose to buy something else over a Funko pop. That makes me sad to think about because I love Funko and think their products can make great gifts if they were a little more affordable

I've not bought a pop in awhile that was a common but some of the old commons in the DC line I do need to complete my set like Green Arrow.

Unfortunately for Funko, they are probably a necessary evil just to keep revenue up.

This I can agree with. 9.99 for a common pop as a general gift would make much more sense and could potentially introduce more fans. And we’ve already seen the higher price structure for lower LE pops.

Also don't give us a common and then a glow,metallic and flocked variant. Sometimes it's tough seeing 3-4 of the same pop on the wall

I think commons are essential to the hobby. Funko attacts a lot of people, different types of people who like different genres. They aren't after the LE ones or chases. They just like the common because it is their favorite character. That's it. They don't sell as many sure but they play their small part.

This is what I was saying. Causal gift givers are not looking to pay exclusive prices, they just want a cheap fun gift.

I get gifted common pops from friends of mine because it is relatively cheap and a great small gift to give to someone. I appreciate the gesture and maybe they start to look at Funko's to consider, hey maybe I can start collecting haha.
