How to Tell Fake Funko Pops

Postby DG_FunkPoppa » Sun Aug 07, 2022 10:12 pm

Purchasing grails online can be a difficult task because you don’t want to spend a large amount of money on a potentially fake pop.

Is there a website, or database where you can check fake pop pics against the pop you’re looking to buy?

If not, what do you to determine if a pop is fake or authentic before you buy?

taste them, the fakes have a faintly cinnamon taste to them. if it tastes like spearmint, it's real.

You only can do it with other references, but if they sell it with blurred pictures or stolen ones you will not know, so worry more about the way you pay or the plataform where you buy it.

easiest way is to ask around, share photos and most importantly do research before buying big money pieces.

This is seriously hilarious. :roflmao: but on a real note I just try to get all of our pops from reputable companies, and if by chance the pop is on eBay. I really do my due diligence to read the sellers ratings and their selling history. Oh and my husband you tube everything as a resource. lol

This is one of my biggest worries, buying a pop for high price only to find out it’s fake. Like the PA Vegeta so many fakes out there

Those fakes have really upped their games so there aren’t any generic things to look for to spot a fake. It could be as easy as the box art has weird cutout borders to a little color difference in the sticker on the box. Definitely recommend to ask around — discord groups and/or Reddit

I’ve been wanting to buy some of the older Attack on Titan pops that I have missed, but there are a lot of fakes. There is definitely good advice in this thread. One thing I always do when buying from Mercari or eBay is to look at the seller’s other listings. I tend to trust a seller more if they look like a collector that is trimming down their collection.

When you all are discussing fakes, does that mean knock off pops of normal ones that are being sold or of Protos?

I’ve bought plenty of fakes. Usually the much older vaulted pops are easy targets. I had a list of at least 30 vaulted pops that I wanted, now it’s only 8

If the price is too good to be true I always Google “pop name” fake Funko pop. There’s a French website out there, anti-fake Funko.fr, that always comes up usually in the first couple links. They do a good job of breaking down the obvious differences and there’s usually a side by side picture to go with what they’re saying.

There’s many ways to tell a real from a fake but best thing to do to tell the difference online is look at what a fakes look like for example a favorite of mine I bought a few months ago was Dr. Doom a few ways you were able to tell was if it had a marvel or a Warner bros symbol on the bottom on the box if it was a marvel symbol it was real and if it was a Warner bros symbol it was fake. Another way I was able to tell if it was fake was the top of the box if the pop symbol was small it was a fake if it was a normal size pop symbol like every other funko pop it was most likely real.

I bought it from a dude at NYCC. At the cons people get over joyed and buy with out checking if they are fake. This past October I spotted a fake and brought it to the attention of the vendor.

Some fakes look very similar to the authentic ones. grails and vaulted pops that you can’t buy at a store are the ones that are usually fake.
