good question, each collector are unique to their own personal liking. I used to buy a line that I really liked and had a gut feeling it would be hard to get later on; example, when Finding Nemo first released, it was merely impossible to find mint condition boxes, since the Hot Topics I searched for them was severely damaged, as a collector, box condition matters to me.
An another good example that would be is Beavis and Butthead, hardly saw it on any retail shelves, just the after market.
So nowadays-- it really depends on the line, and how much you're willing to shell out (to pay). I can tell you, this much, from collecting such a long periods of time, now on and off, and only buy what I really like ... its hard to tell if I should wait or not, but I had missed a lot of opportunities by doing that also; which is good and bad, good because money is being saved towards responsibility spending, and the bad because I forgotten about it and the resale value just went up too much for my own liking too.
Hope this gives you some insight ... cheers
