Do I have to be a fan to buy the Pop!?

No you do not have to be a fan IMO. Last pop I bought is Poet Anderson didn’t know what’s it’s about just really like how it looks. Buying pop of your fandom only justify the purchase.

I have a lot of Pops! in my collection that I have acquired which I just think look awesome, mostly from anime, but I couldn't tell you anything about the license and who the character is, or why they are depicted in this way. I just reacted to the design. (For example SDCC 2022 Enmu)

Conversely, there are lines released, which when I see them, I feel no inclination to buy the Pops! And then, when I happen to watch the show, and become invested in the characters, I suddenly feel the need to add the Pops! to my collection. (For example House of Dragon - Daemon looks much cooler when I know what a complex character he is)

This collecting thing is so complicated...

I rarely buy a pop of a fandom I don’t follow. If it looks pretty dope and I like it, then I’ll buy it. You collect what you like. That’s how I see it.

This reminds me of the punk scene where if you wore a shirt and were female you got drilled by people to see if you were a "real" fan of the band. I respect the mods, so I won't tell you how I would reply.

Thankfully I don't get that as much in the collecting world, people are happy you like what they like. I have bought a lot of creatures because I like them and haven't seen the show, they look cool. To me, it's no different than buying a creature statue from an artist that has no pop culture reference.

It's okay to like what you like, no matter what level you like it at.

Simply buy what you like. I have a few anime pops that I liked the mold of. No idea who the characters are, but they look cool

I tend to only buy Pops that fit into my existing collection but it’s hard not picking up a couple every now and then (especially at a convention) that look amazing and all of a sudden I have an emerging Funko Disney collection.

Not really. I personally prefer to *only* collect from my favorite fandoms, but there are very few exceptions.

Tiamat from D&D has to be one of my favorite POP!s of all time, and I don't know a dang thing about the game.
Just collect what you think is cool is my best advice.

When I first started collecting, it was really what I thought looked cool. After realizing that I have hundreds of Pops that quickly changed. Now its more of do I really like it enough to add to my collection and does it look good.

I've definitely bought a handful of Pops based on the sculpt or the finish of the figure! I don't really collect Anime pops, but some DBZ pops eating noodles is too adorable not to own!

Now, thinking about it, I think I bought pops that I don't normally collect involves with food or is a type of food lol

There’s plenty of anime ones that looked so sick that I just bought em all aka the death note line but never seen it lol

I think it helps to be a fan when collecting because you run our of room very quickly. I've had to prioritize what to keep and what to get rid of. Something I continue to this day to have room and ti keep collecting.

I have several pops I own that I never seen the show/movie they are from. For example, I have most of the Ahsoka pops (and all the Figpins of her) as I like her character design in the Star Wars realm. However, I've never seen rebels or any other show she makes an appearance in. I did get to meet the voice actor at Wondercon in 2017. Got her to sign the first Ahsoka pop (the hot topic one) without a fee. I tried to get her to sign 2 others at SWC in 2022, but she was charging over $100 per signature and the line was out the building. Crazy.

Not really. Sometimes I buy stuff just to complete a line or collection. I'm a completionist, so having one of every possible release or variant in a line takes priority over how I feel about a specific piece.

For a while my collection existed mostly of just unique pops i found interesting. Half of them i had no knowledge of the underlying IP.

Typically I only buy ones that I am a fan of or have a nostalgic connection to, but I have certainly bought some that I thought looked cool or would display well, even if I wasnt too familiar with the property...

Collect what you like! I personally started picking up 2 themes for my pops. First one is all monkeys! I have lines like the original Planet of the Apes, which I have never seen. That won't stop me from digging my Dr Zaius pop. Second line is scary looking pops like Kuchisake and Junji Ito Hideo. I started to look into the origins of both pops AFTER i had acquired them. I love doing it this way.

I feel as though you buy what you want for whatever reason you want. Gave firefighter pops to coworkers, gave front line workers to other friends who work in healthcare and now some Disney ones for my little girl. What I like is that there is so much to choose from for whatever reason you collect.

I do the same thing. I buy for family, friends, and coworkers and for myself I try to stick to my favorite lines but I have so many favorites it isn't funny.

Collect what makes you happy! If you pick up something because you like the design, maybe you check out what it's from and love the Pop or collectible even more after

Enmu's a great pop design. Get what you want, as everyone's saying. What matters is the enjoyment you get out of, and maybe in the end it may get you interested to watch something you wouldn't have otherwise.

I’m the same with sharks or surfboards. I buy any POP w/ a shark or any POP! where someone has a surfboard. Naturally Fin du Chomp was a must buy
