Do I have to be a fan to buy the Pop!?

Have you bought a Pop! just for the way it looks, even if you are not a fan of, or have no knowledge about the licensed product?

I have a lot of Pops! in my collection that I have acquired which I just think look awesome, mostly from anime, but I couldn't tell you anything about the license and who the character is, or why they are depicted in this way. I just reacted to the design. (For example SDCC 2022 Enmu)

Conversely, there are lines released, which when I see them, I feel no inclination to buy the Pops! And then, when I happen to watch the show, and become invested in the characters, I suddenly feel the need to add the Pops! to my collection. (For example House of Dragon - Daemon looks much cooler when I know what a complex character he is)

This collecting thing is so complicated...

I buy alot of things because they are cute. There are many things i buy and i have no idea what they are. I Usually get curious and end up watching things related to the pop i bought, but not always.

For ex: GoT. I like dragons, it is my Chinese Zodiac sign. I bought the dragons and had never watched the show. Binged the show after i saw Battle of Bs and now im watching House of the Dragon

Also, Kaguya from Naruto… i bought her. Have no idea what she is and never watched Naruto. I just think shes really cute in pop form.

I don’t think you do. For instance I had no idea who Gloomy Bear was until 4 days ago but I promise a flocked Gloomy Bear will end up in my collection at some point though it’s also how I found myself to a lot of new things that I am a fan of now.

I buy a ton of stuff that just looks cool, no idea what some of them are. As the years go in Funko just makes more detailed figures that just catch the eyes.

Definitely not. For example, I'm sure there's people who collect some of the NFT redeemables but aren't necessarily huge fans of some of those fandoms. Some of them look cool, and it's the thrill of the hunt for the royalty sets and gambling on opening packs for the redeemables. And maybe for others, there's been convention exclusives that simply look amazing them for whatever reason. To each their own and everyone is a fan of something.

You can buy the Pop no matter what. I have plenty of Pops that just look great but aren't things I normally collect. Although maybe I should do less of that to save money and space

Being a fan is always subjective- sometimes I like a Pop, and it has been the start of me watching something- sometimes the Pop is so scary- I’m not ever going to watch

Sometimes a cool design can get you into a show. I saw the pops for My Hero Academia and thought they were so weird that I had to watch the show. (I thought it was about battle rabbits because of Deku's costume hahaha! ) It's one of my absolute favorites now, so I'm really glad I did.

As long as you have space and funds, just get whatever you like.

The Pops have actually opened me up for new things to follow. I bought a Lying Cat GITD Pop just because I thought the glow is sick, even if I didn't know anything about Saga. I ended up reading the series and am now a lifelong fan of Saga! Same with Ted Lasso this year. I had no idea about the Pop, researched the show, ended up watching the show and loving it.

Also, I bought a Scrooge McDuck 10" from Target. I just loved the design on it with the laughing Scrooge and gold underneath. My mom took it and put it on display in her house. She said it looked like a nice alternative to the traditional laughing Buddha (a staple in a lot of asian homes). Doesn't matter if you're a fan or not, if you like it, buy it!

Yes! I have done this too many times now. Most recently with Iron Giant. I loved the look of the new 3L Soda and it got me digging Iron Giant in general. I have far too many pops and sodas because of this.

I just bought that Thor boat too and out of box that thing is so detailed and amazing i am in awe. I am so impressed with the work they put into that piece and the Bifrost!!! Love it.

I think many people have given away pops as gifts to friends who don’t collect them but love the show/character.

Like others have said, collect what you like. I have a couple of scattered Pops of characters I’m not a fan of but I liked their design. If it is something you are interested, go for it!

Literally this is exactly what I wanted to post about! I got the cube just bc I thought it looked cool OOB.

Soda wise-oomph happens too much. Most notably with the spooky space kook.

I try not to stray too much from my main fandoms but do buy sculpts I think are unique and great.

That’s a great question you’re asking! I 99% only buy from lines I collect and leave ones I admire for other collectors. I try not to take away from anyone who is more real fan than me… and a reason to spend less money and not worry about space. But there is that 1% of the time where the design is just too perfect to pass up and I open em up right away!

i have bought a few pops that are out of the norm of what i collect. friends said i shouldn't cause i'm not a true fan but i just like the way it looked so i bought it anyways . that's what collecting is all about

No you absolutely do not! I love that Enmu pop. I was way too slow to grab it, but I absolutely do not care about anime at all, but he's cool as heck! I also grabbed the Powerpuff Girls set even though I'm not the biggest fan of that show because they look awesome!
