Old 2D Pop box art vs new 3D Images

Postby Dave17251 » Fri Jun 02, 2023 5:42 am

So it has been a while since Funko has put out the 3D photos onto pop boxes to replace the old 2D art. I genuinely thought it was due to covid or another issue at the time and believed it was temporary. Some new pops that are out like Screaming Clown give me hope but at the same time, Ronnie Rabbit is from the same set and carries that 3D art. Am I crazy to think that the 3D art is just not as appealing as 2D? Thoughts?

The 2D art looked better in my opinion.

Yes! I think this is why I feel like the new 3D images look tacky. Reminds me of one of the most famous counterfeits out there, the SDCC unmasked Jason Voorhees.

I'm an in box collector for the most part. The 2D art is so iconic to the early days of PoP for Funko and it will always be a favorite of mine. But as I was looking at some of the boxes for the newer 3D print. its grown on me since it was first introduced. The 3D gives me vibes of a more realistic product vs the cartoon aspect of 2D.

Adding to the 2D party. Just iconic and classic. I still favor the OG hero pose pops too.

The 2D art along with the POP! Logo had a fun comic book-like design. It was part of the reason I liked keeping my pops in box.

I agree the 3D design reminds me of counterfeits sometimes. The quality of the image seems to vary between pops, too.

On its own the 3-d isn’t too noticeable but man when you have a set it looks so awful next to the good art. The one I point to the most often is the Egyptian gods from Yu-Gi-Oh, poor Ra sticks out like a sore thumb with his lazy photoshop looking box compared to the other 2

YESSS!!! That new Roronoa Zoro from Kody has the updated 3D glam yet it looks so off when its next to the the older one where its the same exact mold but with the 3D glam now.

I miss the 2D art renderings, too. Seems like the 2D art appears larger on the box compared to the newer 3D art? Either way, it's still taking some getting used to when I see the 3D art

They did the same for the Tsuyu Asui common and NYCC translucent version. It looked odd side by side.

The 3D also ruins some imo. Some pops have 2D being their major format like anime and especially Sanrio. Those definitely took a hit. I have Chi Chai Monchan and his art is his original art that Sanrio has for them.

I started noticing when the 3D images rolled out and I absolutely dislike it. There was some pops I didn't buy just for the fact they had 3D images ruining the box. I'm over it now tho lol

The 2D is a lot nicer, but now I am used to the 3D and not bothered any more. It has to be a lot less expensive to put an existing 3D render in a box though. I’d be a more bothered these days if Funko changed the font or colors on the boxes.

It honestly doesn't bother me too much since they made the switch, and I'm not entirely sure when they did make the switch. I do like 2D art a bit more now that it has been mentioned, but it honestly depends on the Pop.

Unfortunately, 3D printing is used prominently by Chinese fakes/knock-offs.
