Several years ago (6 +) I didn’t buy everything, but pretty close to it, now I don’t have the room to do that anymore plus I’m sure I was also getting for friends too.

I have seen it done at NYCC and it resulted in 2 of those massive Funko bags being almost totally filled.

This definitely happens. Likely most people don't see it because only the very first people in line get the chance. Usually when I go by the SDCC booth there's already a bunch of sold out items.
