Is black light dead?

Postby RedRoo » Tue Sep 17, 2024 9:55 pm

So with halloween coming out i noticed that were gonna have a black light stitch. It popped the thought in my head tho, Is black light dead?

Remember a while ago when they were pumping it out as fast as they could and now its just small numbers. I think it might of been detrimental pushing so much out all at once because it diluted the collectors field and suddenly there was one for every character.

I gotta admit i did love some of them but then it got a little to much.

What's your thoughts?

At one point it definitely was overkill. I can see them spreading them out, such as making them convention exclusives. And if the demand is high, then consider releasing more in between conventions, but not as much as before.

Yeah, some of the black light doesn't make sense but I still think there are good ones out there
Fundays 2022 - Proto Robots
Fright Night 2022
Fundays 2023 - Protomoa Wolves
Fundays 2024 - Crown Kraken

Don't stand in my way!!!

Agree. I feel its in the sweet spot of being enough but not too much.

I think its better they slowed down a bit on them
Every new variant they do they over saturate the market to quickly with random pops getting that variant treatment. Look how fast the chrome pops got played out.

I don't think it's dead, but I do think they went overboard with what they make in blacklight. It's the same story with Funko... they see something that sells and they are going to go nuts producing more than they should. Sure they can make a quick buck, but I think it hurts the long-term popularity of the concept.

Don't think its dead, its just not the FOTW now like it was before . Look at the blacklight pieces at fundays, they're doing pretty decent so there is still a lot of interest

I think that’s my main issue with how Funko is running things recently. They come out with an idea that’s cool and then it gets pumped out way too fast and overplayed. I know usually production is planned way in advance but just wish they wouldn’t plan to release them so quickly one after the other

definitely a little more money for some flocked pops, blacklight a lot easier to just paint up

I do love some black light when it makes sense for the character or in small doses. The fact that ppl liked them at first then they decided to drop 400 different ones totally killed the allure.

I think when it looks like they're putting in consideration into the production, it is more desirable. But when it looks like they just chose any color that doesn't depict the character well or is offputting, then that's where the series become less wanted. Also think with the rapid release or over-release, they made it pretty common.

I did see the new Hulkbuster at Target the other day and although I don't collect Blacklight anymore, that piece made me ponder a bit.

Yes, that's how I would put it. Killed the allure. I like the beginning ones they released, specifically Spider-Man

I think it took the same path as chrome where people liked it initially but they spammed it now people have grown weary of every single pop having a black light variant

100% this. Exclusivity makes it more attractive. Also hard to justify picking up a black light when I have the same mold already.

Overall it was cool at first and still is but I think at the end of the day, a lot of people care more about the actual pop design itself versus infinite variants with just black light.

I don't think it's dead but definitely over saturated. I'd love to see a built in UV light similar to the squishmallows from jazwares this sdcc. That way you wouldn't need to shine a UV light to see the glow

I think they should have left it a lot more of a unique item for conventions and Funday events. There is a such thing as too much of a good thing. Having said that there are some great ones out there but maybe they should slow down on the output. If I saw a black light item I enjoyed for sale tomorrow I would probably buy it.

It was a really cool idea when it was applicable. When it suited a certain character or a theme. Then it became every character and every theme and swiftly wore out its welcome. Now Target has to clearance them just to try and clear them out. I hope the idea isn’t completely abandoned but it does need to be utilized a LOT more sparingly.

I imagine it will be like all of the other variant types over the years, its not dead they just won't be flooding the market with blacklight variants of everything anymore.

There were for sure some that just didn't fit and I do agree that they flooded the market for a while. Some of them, I always thought, would have been better as glow-in-the-dark instead of blacklight. Having said that, I can still see some here and there and if they fit, then I'm good with it.
