Box Repair - Tips

Postby Kwik_One » Sat Jan 13, 2018 10:11 am

Apologies if this already exists.

So, a friend of mine told me he uses a hair straightener to repair boxes. I tried it and it works like a charm. Now, it won’t fully get out creases but it will get rid of warping, bends or other minor imperfections. It won’t warp the window (at least mine didn’t).

Anyone else have any tips or tricks?

That's interesting. How does it work exactly? Are there videos?

Let me dig up some boxes that need help and I’ll share before and after pics and maybe even a vid. I was super hesitant at first but tried it on some beat up boxes and was pleasantly surprised. As previously noted, it won’t take out creases but it does help warps and light bends.

Just for the curiosity, I need to see a video haha.

I'd be worried that the heat would melt the ink or something on the box.

Huh I haven't heard about this either. I wonder if the fix will last permanently or eventually go back to being warped.

I'm not sure that, essentially paper, has memory like plastic or resin. Would be a fun experiment.

How bad was the warping that you fixed?

I have heard of people "pressing" comic books to get rid of some flaws, but a crease is a crease not sure a flat iron can remedy that.

I had heard people place towels over the box and iron them or something to that extent. Never actually tried something like this though.

Interesting... I'd love to see the video too! And please note what temperature I should set too! I recently ordered a pop online. I actually bought 3 just in case, to avoid having damaged one. But all 3 came in damaged....

It makes complete sense. What I usually do is flatten the box as much as I can, put a towel over it, and iron on a low setting.
Essentially the same process, but I like the barrier that the towel allows.

Seriously though, since I shifted to being oob I just don't care as much about minor box flaws. I would rather have good paint and imperfect box over flawless box and jacked-up paint.

this i'd like to try, but on old pop boxes that i dont care about anymore until i get the settings and timing right. i usually straighten the edges and im not sure, but i feel it reenforces and strengthens the factory folds.

I've tried using an iron with paper towels as a barrier before, but found that just placing the box under something like some books or a case of water for a few days and then flipping it over and leaving it a few more will work just as well for fixing warped boxes or dents. Can't do anything with the creases but netter than running the risk of overheating the box and warping the plastic window.

Good to know! Sometimes the boxes dont seem to be fukky folded or warp a bit so sounds like this will help

I agree! Paint/quality is #1 important. I spent 20 mins selecting the “perfect” paint job of my last pop (took longer cuz it was a 3 pk so had to check all 3).
