SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
IF YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SDCC 2010 FUNKO ITEMS AND ABOUT CLAMSHELLS AND ALL FOT HAT, THEN JUST READ THE TOP, IF NOT SKIP DOWN TO THE STARS AND READ THE HISTORY.
As most of you would know, the SDCC 2010 Exclusives came in both a clamshell or box.
Heres a reminder of what they look like
I would like your opinion on:
1. Do you like the box or clamshell better and why?
2. Which you think will be more valuable in the future?
3. What are some positives and minuses of each?
4. Any interesting points about either one?
Here are my personal responses to questions 1, 2 and 3.
1. I personally like the boxes better, I think they are more fitting for these pieces. They are displayed well together also.
2. I think that ultimately the clamshells will hold a greater value as opposed to the boxes. They are a piece of history. They show the origin of an ever explosively popular product. Since this packaging was discontinued, it becomes rare and sought after. Sure, there will always be valuable pops, but they are just valuable for being rare and sought after. These will be valuable for a combination of things, including because the packaging and name of the product tells a story. The makes them a true collectors item. ACTION FIGURE HISTORY!
3. Clamshells –
Positives – They have discontinued packaging and the name “Funko Force 2.0 which makes them highly collectible as they show the origins of Pop! The fact that they are different makes them valuable in more than one way.
Minus – They can be hard to display, and may not fit that great into your Pop! Stack.
Box –
Positives – Easy stackable display, fits right into your Pop! Vinyl display.
Minus – Boxes don't do these pieces’ justice. They are more than “just another pop”

In SDCC 2010 Funko showcased a product called Funko Force 2.0. It was the mini spinoff of Funko Force. They came in bubble packaging that collectors now commonly refer to as "clamshells". The first to be released in the product line of "Funko Force 2.0" where 4 DC Figures, all exclusive to San Diego Comic Con 2010. They were:
Batman (Blue Suit) - 1/480
Batman (Metallic Blue) - 1/240
Batgirl (A Black Suit) - 1/240
Green Lantern (GITD) - 1/240
Here are some pictures of them below: (this is what we call clamshells)
These were transferred into boxes by collectors, thats how we get these here:
Therefore the clamshells are the first every pops and the originals, the boxes are the same pops, still the first pops, just different packaging.
Here's the picture from SDCC 2010 of the box less protos Brian had:
Here is the original concept of the clamshell boxes and Funko Force 2.0 Line:
I believe the metallic blue Batman is actually 1/480. So those were hand-painted protos?? I wonder who has those
Great write up...I love threads about Funko history!! Thanks so much for sharing!!

Re: SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
Awesome info on the history! As for the questions...
1. Box is better and it's not even close. Reason, they're stackable! In-box collectors can easily stack and shelve them. OOB can easily take them out the box and preserve the box.
2. Clamshell is obvious always going to be more rare because you just don't see them. Like you said it's a piece of history.
3. The one pro for clamshell is that it looks like you can see the back of the pop so it would be easier to inspect pops for paint flaws. Which in turn is the minus for boxed pops. Can't see the full figure only the front.
4. Not much to add but in either package the pops look awesome!

Clamshell looks to be heat sealed? So once you open it, your done! Thats not for me. Reminds me of BBT when Brent Spiner rips open Sheldon's mint in package Wesley Crusher figure. He nearly has a stroke. LOL

1. Do you like the box or clamshell better and why?
Box because they are nice and easy to store.
2. Which you think will be more valuable in the future?
Depends. Box because the look but more clamshell because of history and they came before just like cars.
3. What are some positives and minuses of each?
Boxes can't see the back and clamshells you can. Clamshells take up more space.
4. Any interesting points about either one?

I recycle all boxes, inserts, clamshells & "exclusive" stickers to reduce my carbon footprint. I find that it's the most responsible method of collecting.

Re: SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
Those clamshells are cool. I've obviously never gas one, but it does maximize the viewability of the Pop without removing it from the box. But alas, I'm an oob collector, and the clamshells just seem to take up too much room. Using the clamshells on a handful of very special funko would be cool, but I still prefer the cheaper boxes.......also I worked at wienerschnitzel once, and they called their boxes clamshells. Nothing really to do with pop, I just hate that word now. Hahahaha

Re: SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
A few points:
- All of them are actually 1/240. The 1/480 is meant to represent both Batmans (regular and metallic). Think of it like metallic being a chase variant made in equal numbers as the regular. They both get the 1/480 sticker, but that represents 480 of the mold, across two styles.
- It wasn't collectors that moved them into boxes. That makes the boxes sound like glorified custom projects, which I don't think is the case. I can't remember the details of the story, but they were released both ways.
- Value is such a hard thing to pin down. Sure, you can make the argument that the clamshells are 'historic' so they could demand more in the long run. But if nobody likes them and everyone wants a boxed version, then it's the boxes that will end up being more valuable. I could see it going either way, honestly.

Really!? I did not realize this...I just saw the 480 sticker and wondered why they were always listed as 240 Thanks for clarifying!!

The Pop! line was introduced with 4 characters at SDCC 2010 and were packaged in clamshells. Following that introduction they were boxed.

1. Box. You can open them and remove the figure itself. They are easier to break down and store. If you open the clamshell, it becomes trash.
2. "Don't care at all. It's not my reason to collect." Same response as Ross.
3. Once you open clamshells, thats it. I also like the box art better, but its pretty cool being able to see the entire figure in the clamshell.
4. Spelling/sticker mistakes should not make either more "valuable".

Re: SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
1. Do you like the box or clamshell better and why?
- Clamshell, because it's more historic, plus proof it NEVER was opened.
2. Which you think will be more valuable in the future?
- Clamshell for the above reason.
3. What are some positives and minuses of each?
- Everything said above.
- Minus for clamshell (which is positive for box), you can open the box version without losing value (if you're careful not to damage any of the box flaps). and Actually get to touch/hold/feel the piece. Where as the clamshell must remain there for eternity or risk de-valuing your piece by 30-50%.
4. Any interesting points about either one? :

I remember buying these guys in the clamshells at that Comic Con. It was almost on a whim. I wasn't sure if I needed the variants, but I really wanted the yellow oval Batman (my favorite era of Batman), so I figured I might as well buy Batgirl and the metallic Batman while I was there. Now I have close to 90 Batman related Pops and am very happy I picked all three up.
Keep in mind, I take everything out of the package, so those clamshells were destroyed back in 2010, too...

I like the boxes because I like to take them out and they make them easy to display. As opposed to clamshell, displaying can me a pain and take a lot of room.
Probably clamshells holding their value as they are sealed.
One reason I don't like the clamshell is they are sealed, and if the pop comes out of the footing packaging then you have a loose pop in a bubble that you can fix.

Alot of you seem to agree that boxes are better due ti the fact that they are stackable.
Also you agree that clamshells are moe special due to the history.

Re: SDCC 2010 BOX OR CLASMHELL - WANT YOUR OPINION!!!
I have the original 4 from the SDCCs, but I really like the box design. I hate anything blister or clamshell. The box allows the opening and touching and feeling of the toy. If opened carefully enough, you can still have a MIB toy and enjoy it at the same time.
But for uniqueness alone, the clamshells stand out in a collection for sure. Clamshell or not, any first generation/series of a collector line is usually more desirable than a series that is currently widely available at retail outlets.

These are amazing. Love looking at Funko history. Here are my answers:
1. I like the box better because they stack and clamshells hurt my hands when I try to open them
2. Clamshells will probably be more valuable because there are so few of them.
3. Pro of a clamshell: No need to worry about damaging the packaging as much as a box. Con: They can be a pain to open
Pro of box: Easier to stack. Con: Damaged easily.

The boxes are honestly more practical for display purposes, but I take them out of box so that doesn’t matter to me.
I like the clam shell design and feel it would be easier and safer for stores to use clamshells since they would be able to hang them.
I would love to own a clamshell Funko Force pop, but I don’t think I could ever afford one.

The clam shell was nice since you can see all around the pop, but the box design is great for stacking a collection and I tend to like the artwork on the box also when adding to the collection.

I endorse this response, and similar to other collectibles the clam shells should be worth more in time since it's sealed right?
I will get my hands on one of these one day. I started collecting....at a later date unfortunately.

I wasn't around when these dropped, but I probably would have wanted the boxes so I could go OOB...
As a collector now, the Clamshells are Funko history so I want those more haha.
