New Star Wars Astromech Mold Coming

Postby maythefunkobewithyou » Wed Mar 01, 2017 9:59 pm

According to Reis O'Brien, we will be getting a new astromech mold that will bobble not at the shoulders (as it does currently), but at the dome, making it a true bobble head.

It's interesting to note that this is not the first major change to the astromech droid mold. The Smugglers Bounty r2-d2 had a new, bigger and more detailed mold. This is best illustrated by the comparison of r2-q5 and c2-b5 below:

Interesting that they would go through all the work making another change again so soon. If the other one met their licencing agreement, I don't see the point.

So will they make more of the common R2-D2's only with a bobblehead now?

I would imagine it would be the new Episode 8, The Last Jedi version of R2-D2. Just a guess.

The original R2 is in my top 5 favorite Star Wars pops because of the design so I'm not sure I love the change. But I'll wait until I've seen it in person to judge.

I get they are going to do that for any new version but are they just going to "retire" the original R2-D2 or make a that same one with a bobble head?

The original R2-D2 is what made me start collecting these. I am excited to see the new droid molds but I will always have a place in my heart for the original droids.

I just finished the newest podcast and heard that. Not sure I love it. I think of how many problems those gold BB8 pops with the bobble head had. But hey, Reis knows his stuff so I trust Funko will do it right!
