Different strokes but I think in general i prefer the proto since it is a difference of design vs change of text on the pog. However I collect both

I recently picked up my very first AP or artist proof Rocksteady and was thrilled to have my very first AP. Then it really started to dawn on me that they hold similar rarity as protos, but are just more closer to production then Protos. Please note that in no way am I trying to insinuate that one is better than the other, obviously it depends on who prefers what and what you collect, so to each there own. So please no bashing here as Id like to make this as a topic to discuss and share, which do you prefer to have in your collection a Proto or an Artist Proof?
Personally only having an Artist Proof piece and no proto, this is special to me and the one I prefer. Maybe that will change, but I hope one day to get this piece signed by the CoF Mike Becker himself, as I intend to keep this piece.
Both are amazing but I think a proto is better for the fact that the figure is different and not the same like a AP figure.

How many artist proof versions are there for each soda? I was under the impression there are only one but I’m now thinking there are more…

I may be wrong here, but I believe there is only one AP, and there are a couple protos. My understanding is that the AP is the final piece, but I may be wrong. I hope someone can chime in here and clarify.

I definitely prefer prototypes.
Hey! I’m eee. I’ve been collecting Funko since 2020. Joined the board in July 2024. I mainly collect Freddy [+some Franny lately] but am always finding new and old things to want!

I think i have asked before, but.. can someone tell me how do you get the AP? is it like a chase and you have a chance at it when buying the soda retail? or is it only at special events like fundays?

AP just seems like a very refined version of the soda, while the Proto is just a more unique piece . Having both an AP and a Proto, I would 100% want a proto; just looks so different

How does one acquire an AP soda?
social media, know someone at funko, or just buy from someone on ebay. heard rumors you could find one in a sealed soda but I don't think that's true.

same, ultimately ap's are just a minor change of text to the pog. Still cool though.

That may be true for some, but I know for certain that I have seen multiples of AP same style, same domestic/international. No idea what it actually is, ive heard there are as many as 6. tbh that would make more sense given ap's aren't generally that expensive - 50-150 bucks at most.

What I would really like to see is a multi color proto. I dont think I have seen one on a soda, only single color or white.

Yeah I get this, it only really comes down to a small change of text on the pog vs protos are a completely different look.

I got a full tutorial on AP sodas from a fellow funatic during fundays. I collect both.

I prefer Protos just because the unfinished product makes them look unique. APs sometimes look real close to the final version so it doesn't stand out as much. But just my two cents

Only wish there was an easier way to get protos instead of paying an arm and a leg for them on the aftermarket

I agree! Funko gives them away during their social events like Funko Fundays, as well as their online shop as part of their rewards program. But even then, it’s still not easy.

Exactly, if its not paying a crazy price on the aftermarket, it's jumping through a zillion hoops for the chance at one on social media or rewards program

I mean participating with Funko challenges or the Funko events, gives each person the opportunity to get one. It definitely is harder and harder to get one when there are a lot of funatics, but dont give up there are lots of chances to get one.

Appreciate the optimism and support! I appreciate that Funko definitely does try to give them away as fair as possible at all their events. It definitely does show that they care about the Funatics community <3

I'd prefer getting a proto over AP since it looks obvious what it is and not relying on the pog plus looks cooler having the unfinished mold on a display

not sure on the count for AP but it is definitely more than 1 it isn't a 1 of 1 type of deal more like they make say 10-20.

I don’t mind either but I’d love a unique proto any day of the week. But all in all it really depends on the soda.

I have a quick question that would fall into this category I think..
What is the difference between Proto, Artist Proof, and "scrapper"?
I've seen this term being used more and more recently on Twitter and Insta to describe unreleased Pops
