What would happen if Funko stopped making Pops! ?

Postby Elewitt2022 » Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:14 pm

Just a thought I had as I was putting my entire collection into a new database....

What would happen to the value of Pops! if Funko were to stop making new Pops!, for whatever reason.

Would the values go up, due to scarcity, and the lack of options?

Would they plummet due to lack of new product, with fewer collectors being drawn in by new licenses and variants?

Would it stay the same, perhaps fluctuating up and down while the collectors deal with the news?

I am not saying it is going to happen!!! [-o< [-o< [-o<

But what if it did?

I would guess Plummet as new collectors would greatly slow down and a hobby like this depends on a steady stream of new people with new things to collect and trade. But I'm not a smart man so I dunno.

I know there are those that hope it crashes so they can get the ones they really want for much cheaper, their reasoning at least but I'd guess they'd still be really expensive. At least the ones I would want lol.

One thing for sure is that the current Pops would either go up in value...orrr go down in value..or maybe stay the same....but I'd for sure be bummed cause there's still tons of Pops I'm hoping will be made!

I'm scared for the price of value. Especially from past experiences of stores closing down or shows stopping. That factors alot in a pops value.

I agree to this because it really depends on the collectors and the people. If there is a demand there will be a supplier.

Collecting is like being a shark. Most sharks need to keep swimming. Most collectors need to keep collecting. If Pops stop being made, then prices would drop because a lot of people would move on so they can keep swimming. But there will still be pieces that sell for a lot and the secondary market will keep moving along. Look at Mego action figures - when Mego went under, prices dropped and you couldn’t give them away. But now, people who grew up with Mego collect and rebuild their collections so popular lines are super expensive.

I would be super bummed, but maybe my wallet would not. I doubt I'd sell much, if any of what I have, and I don't collect to resell anyway, so not really a big deal. I'd keep a ton to continue to display, give some away to friends and maybe donate the rest. I never expect to make my money back, so I'm not stressing it.

Definitely a hard idea to think about. Would people value them as an antique/collectible still? Or would the next new thing be all the rage?

Pop has certainly made a cultural impact imo since you see them in TV, sports and all sorts of media. Much bigger history than the lame "beanie baby" jokes.

I think overall the prices would plummet, except for the most rare pieces and possibly Freddy Funko since he's the Mascot. When you see antique collecting shows, it seems as though Mascots are usually sought after.

But who knows, prices could fall tomorrow and I'd probably need a storage unit cause I'd be picking up all my missing grails lol

Much like most collectibles that experience such a thing, probably initially volatility. Then a dip, then a rise, followed by a dip. Long term, it's hard to say. Would folks go in after very sought after pieces, probably but you need new blood to keep the hobby pumping. That's why I say dip, rise, dip.

I would immediately buy a Gold Loki if that happened lol It's truly hard to say. I see some people trying to sell super rare Freddy's for $5k+ and no one's really buying but then you also go to Five Below and they're overflowing with pops. Definitely an interesting idea to think about and discuss.

The 'beanie babies 2.0!' thing is really annoying to me. Not only because none of these people can come up with something more clever, but because they clearly don't understand that fads are not something that last over a decade. Go ahead and hate Pops all you want, but be a little more original in your quips.

Lot of philosophical stuff here and I love it...lol

For the record, Beanie Babies and the Ty company that makes them are doing just fine these days & they still sell millions of dollars in Beanie Babies every year...at Toy Fair their booth is larger than Funko's and while people equate them with something that's hot that ends up being a bust or whatever, they're evergreen products and in spite of the jokes or whatever the FAD of the collecting them for INVESTMENT purposes died, not the product...Beanie Babies are in every major hospital, airport, pharmacy or big box variety store you can name, Target, Walmart etc all carry them.

That being said Funko Pops are heading exactly in the direction that Beanie Babies did to some extent...read into the story or watch one of the documentaries on WHY the hype died & you'll see it...but I say all that to say that at some point Pops won't be as hot as they are now, but they'll likely be around for quite some time, just like Beanie Babies ;)

You need a steady group of new collectors to keep/increase values outside of specific objects just being an extreme rarity for maybe a specific fandom that will have a continued fanbase forever (like Baseball or Star Wars). The easiest thing to point to is...Wobblers. The vast majority of non-extreme rares will plummet back to retail cost (or less). The extremely rare items will probably drop quite a bit but retain a fair amount of market value among the collectors who remain and if it does grow in value it will be very slow. And perhaps the ULTRA rare items will remain growing but only among the extreme tax bracket of people who just like collecting all ultra rare items of a particular fandom (Baseball or Star Wars or something like that). So unless you have one of the CWO Pops or Bronze Ken Griffey Jr. It's safe to assume the bulk of your collection would plummet in value if POP stops being produced.

It’s hard to say, either they will plummet in value or skyrocket in value but that depends, if someone want’s to collect funko’s they can’t buy them in stores if they stopped making then which means they will have to go online and buy them for the prices people will sell them for, but again that’s if Funko Pop’s would still appeal to people but it would make Funko’s more collectible then they already are. :freddy2:

I don't think Funko would just close like Mego or other companies like that because they have unique products instead of just being another company that sells action figures. More likely someone would buy the company and keep putting out products branded as Funko. It would remove everything we love about the company though, so most of us on here would probably collect less.

Well there's a lot of signs that show that POP as a product and Funko as a brand/company has really stopped growing. The question is whether or not it can (or has) downscaled appropriately to maintain business and/or if the plans are to sell is there even a buyer. The scary thing is sometimes a company has already reached a size that is so non-maintainable for themselves that they cannot justify or manage downsizing and just shut down completely (think of every major company you know that has shut down even though they could have remained in business at a much smaller scale).
