How do you tell when Pops are going to be vaulted/discontinued?

Postby Servant of Sauron » Sat Jun 23, 2018 6:35 pm

Hi guys,

So I'm pretty new to Pop collecting.. I'm browsing stores to build my collection up a bit.. saving or taking notes of which ones I would like.. which got me thinking about something.

Before I make my purchases, is there a way to tell which Pops I could buy now that may be vaulted or discontinued in the near future? So I could buy the ones now that may not be available in some time.. then I can buy the others that will be in constant production over a longer period of time?

Basically so I don't have to buy a huge amount at once.. maybe buy the ones which may be a little more difficult to obtain in time? Like, if there's some way of checking maybe some have been stopped production already.. and are just still in stock in may stores.. Maybe there's no way of doing this but I thought I would ask anyways.

Thanks!

Unfortunately we do not know that something is going to be vaulted or disappear from stores ahead of time.

There have been plenty of pops I wanted, but I said I'd get them later and then before I got them they would vanish from stores and the prices would sky rocket on Amazon and ebay. It's the risk you take if you can't get all that you want as quickly as possible. :(

It’s been said on these boards time and time again but collect what you love. There is no secret formula or anything on predicting what’s going to be vaulted. They have smart people at their offices predicting what’s going to make based on how many of the previous series sold say Rick and Morty wave 1 to wave 2 and 3. You can buy some Pops that get vaulted but if they made twice as many of them as others that’s the same as buying unvaulted Pops.

I agree 100% about buy what you like. Luckily I'm not a completest. If I like and can afford it I buy it. If I don't like it than leave it. I remember seeing Captain Spaulding and had o have it. I opened it and put it on my desk. I wished I had bought 2 of them as they vaulted it. But hey at least I have 1 :freddy3: :freddy3:

I would start with the ones you would be the most devastated if you couldn't get and then work your way down.

Collect what you like (provided you can afford it of course), as there's no way of telling when a pop is going to be vaulted. Just have fun doing your thing, and pray that a piece you're saving up for stays at retail :)

Most of everything gets vaulted eventually. There’s no knowing when, but if you like a new pop there’s a high chance that it’ll get vaulted eventually.

I completely agree with everyone on this. Collect what you love and makes you happy. Hopefully your wallet can keep up. All pops will eventually become vaulted and unfortunately you don't know when. Some go faster then others but if you get what you want when you see it or have a chance you won't be second guessing yourself because you already bought it.

Also dont let the value of something dictate what you want to collect! Slippery road that one..

dont start collecting because you're worried about the values of each individual pop...
collect because you love the pops in your collection

If you didn’t want it at $10, why suddenly want it when it vaults and is $20?

It’s all a mystery. Best thing is just to hold on and wait. Sure I know over time you may want to sell some to buy new pops or trade. There’s always a risk to it but that’s life.

Just collect what you want and don't worry too much. If you see a vaulted announcement just buy them then, they don't usually immediately jump up unless they're vaulted very quickly after initial production, which is rare. The only one's that are relatively reliably vaulted are in The Walking Dead when characters are killed off, or at least they've done it several times in the last 2 seasons, but not always.

I hate to follow the ladder but all of my fellow collectors are pretty much right on. If you like it - it'd be best for you to pick it up as soon as possible. Especially if you feel like you can't live with out it. It is completely random as far as when something will become vaulted. I will say SDCC/NYCC/ECCC Exclusive are effectively "vaulted" because they are all in limited supply just for the cons but as far as something being traditionally vaulted. That is something that occurs at random.

Whatever the situation when I buy a Pop, I Always try to make sure that I'm buying it for one reason only : because I like it and it makes me happy to get it at that one particular moment, regardless of how rare it is supposed to be or how valuable it is or will be. I have my wishlist, but it's only driven by the value I put in it. I want my collection to reflect what I like, not what the market dictates. Some of my favorite Pops are among the most common and the cheapest, but I like them for what they make me feel, not what they're worth to others.
