Seemingly random anime, video game and movie characters have their own lines, so I don't see why figure skating should be treated any different. It's always the most watched event at the winter olympics. And Yuri on ice (an anime show about skating) has its own pop line.
I think you kinda nailed it on the head though.. How often do people watch figure skating outside of the Olympics? Unfortunately, it's not a main stream sport in the United States. Heck, Tony Hawk is the first skateboarder to get a Pop and there are arguably TONS of people who've at least tried it, so why not more Pros?
"Random" anime, video games and movie characters are honestly probably reaching more people on a more consistent basis.
It'd be really cool to see Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Tonya Harding , etc or any other high profile athlete, but IDK how well it would actually do.
I think if they were to target more niche sports, Shaun White or Michael Phelps are pretty household names at this point. Heck, Dave Mirra for BMX or like another thread mentioned, Tennis players Roger Federer or the Williams sisters are good candidates too.
You have a point. It was very popular in the US during the mid to late 90s, but it's definitely not mainstream in the US now.
However, figure skating is extremely popular in Japan and Korea (skaters are treated like rockstars up there), so I think it'd be quite profitable for Funko.

Japan and Korea are kind of a toy blackhole imo.
I'm curious to see the sales numbers on the recent Soccer pops they've release, especially since most of them have been international players. If that did well, it could mean targeting countries outside the US could be good.
I guess a good example right now is Jollibee. The Filipino collectors in the PI and in the US are both going crazy for them. You have to definitely consider the best figure to release though.

Re: FIGURE SKATER Pop!s please!
So I was a huge advocate for Yuri on Ice pops and even I can admit that they didn't really sell well. I absolutely love them and I'm still looking for an Adult Viktor proto *hint hint* but I can't really see Funko making a line for just figure skaters. Star Olympians perhaps, but not all out just figure skaters. I consider myself a fan of figure skating and even took classes at Fashion Island because that's where Kristi Yamaguchi skated. But for me, at most I would buy a Johnny Weir and a Yuzuru.
Also, am I the only one that doesn't understand the use of 20 year old Playboy sales data as a testament to how well Pops! will sell? I'm honestly confused, please help me understand.

Not sure how popular figure skating pops would be but maybe Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinsky. They used to have a pretty crazy rivalry.

How about a two pack of Dick Button, one as a skater and the other as an announcer with a mike?

I'm not big into this but my daughter would love it. For the most part it seems when there is a Winter Olympics there is a fresh interest in figure skating, especially if there are strong US contenders.

I don't know if I would want Figure Skaters...but if Funko ever decided to come out with Curling Pops, count me in!
Doubt I would ever buy curling pops but it’s one of my favorite things to watch during the Winter Olympics.

I wonder if we would see more of those if it wasn't for the production and shipping delays.
