How to revamp Dorbz?

Postby TriFeckTa » Sun Jan 15, 2017 4:15 am

I know there are tons of people love Dorbz, but i think a part of the reason why i am not into them is because of the way the head is sculpted and detailed. After recently getting into collecting pint size heroes, i realized that pint size figures have heads which show the sculpt and details reminiscent to Pops, but have Dorb-style bodies. Does anyone feel that if Funko made Dorbz utilizing the pint size figure style, that it would be even more appealing?

The uniformity of Dorbz is what makes them appealing to me. It reminds me of what POPs used to be like ;)

They are a line all their own, they are not for everyone but there are a lot of people that love them! They have a format and it seems to work, if they start making changes to make them more like pops or pint sized heroes, then why bother even making them their own line, kinda kills the uniqueness of the various lines.
Variety is the spice of life, the beauty of Funko is that there is something for everyone!

It all starts with one and then the collection starts to build. I didn't like them at first but once I bought the first one (Venelope Ride), it grew on me.

Then they would just be XL Pint Size Heroes which would equate to Regular Size Heroes.

I actually think they've already greatly improved the head sculpts. Early on I felt like they all kind of looked the same (some of the early protos are really hard to tell what they are), but as time had gone on it seems to me they've finessed the heads and added more sculpting and detailing to make them look more like the characters without compromising the shape that makes them "Dorbz". The bodies on the other hand, they're really simplified, and there's just not much you can do with them design-wise other than change the colors and print patterns. I'm still curious to see how they are going to make a legless Dorbz look like it's riding the MotU beasts that are supposed to be coming, I hope they don't just have a hole in the creature's back that you stick the Dorbz into, I just think that would make it look like a preschool toy. The "leglessness" kind of kills ever seeing a Dorbz on a motorcycle too. But that's OK, it separates Pops from Dorbz. There are things they can do with Pops that they can't do with Dorbz (like action poses) and vice versa.

I'm glad to see the die hard dorbz fan defending their uniqueness. I myself have over 215 dorbz at the moment and I think they've come a long way from what they were in the beginning and would hate to see a huge difference made to them. As others have said they aren't for everyone. But I will defend their awesomeness until they cease to exist. I personally think it's a shame more people find the need to bash them at every turn because they are obviously doing well with collectors. Not saying that the OP is bashing them at all, but anytime funko shop releases a new dorbz there are some who feel the need to complain and even fewer who feel the need to speak for everyone else and say that "no one" wants dorbz.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. I love dorbz and will keep buying them if they keep making very cool ones.

Dorbz remind me of vinylmations where you use a consistent canvas, but then through that limitation the artist is asked to show uniqueness and character. I like it, but also enjoy having options of collecting pops and minis too which use different limitations.

I kind of think the MOTU rides will be something like She-ra sitting on Swift Wind's back with the saddle kind of cupping the base of the figure. With those little placeholders they've used to keep the dorbz in place on the ridez. Could be wrong, but I agree, I don't want her actually sitting "inside" Swift Wind's back.

Basically, I agree with everything said above. I like that they are different. I have a few psh, and I have more than a few pop, but Dorbz ,with their unique shape and look are what really draw me. I like that they are different. With each line that is released, I continue to be surprised by the detail they can put on these little figures. I'm very happy with how they look, and want them to stay how they are. Like others have said, they aren't for everyone, but they are most definately for me.

I love my dorbz and I don't want them to change them at all. They have a uniform look but they maintain their individuality between characters. And with the slightly thinner profile from pops I can fit more on a shelf so my wife doesn't think I have as many as I actually do lol

I like Dorbz the way they are, but I think some funny design choices on a few of them made them look weird. Like the Adventure time ones. For some reason, I don't like them, especially Jake. If I was going to change anything it would be the logo. I think it's...bad.

I was looking over my POPS collection the other day and really noticed how much they evolved. From the static poses to stylized ones we see now.

I do appreciate the uniformity of Dorbz, like others have noted the similarities of Vinylmation, which I have several of, LOL.

I am glad to see that there are a vast number of Dorbz fans out there. Also i see a lot of valid points being made, especially with the Vinylmation comparison. I guess for me Dorbz, like Vinylmations are hit and miss, because like some have stated Dorbz are relatively the same general canvas that is used and it is really up to the artist to try their best to interpret the character, sometimes they do a phenomenal job, other times it may look a little odd. I have noticed that like most of Funko's lines as time goes on, the artists do a better and better job. I do notice more sculpting involved in the design of the newer Dorbz which give them more detail and make them more distinguishable. After reading everyone's post and seeing things from their perspective, I can see that Dorbz has really earned their keep in the hearts of many collectors. So maybe it doesn't need to be changed, i can see how they can be beautiful in their own way. I do hope pint-size heroes gains the same success that Dorbz has achieved and that one day Funko maybe will market a Jumbo pint-size hero!

I agree that pint sized heroes combine the PoP and Dorbz aesthetic very well. However, i think changing the Dorbz style would take away from both the Dorbz and the PSH lines too much. The reason Funko has me collecting all these different scales (including Mystery Minis and soon Wacky Wobblers) is due to each one having defining qualities that seperate them. Its part of the reason i have no use for the pocket pops line.....they're just small PoPs. But everything else is so discernable that they practically beg to be collected.........which leads to begging from my wallet for me to resist begging.

In short, Dorbz should remain the same. Same goes for the other Funko brands, too. I'd like sturdier boxes and extras like cards packed with every Dorbz.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your earlier suggestion of an online game for some of these smaller scale lines like Dorbz or even Mystery Minis or Pint Sized Heroes. It would add another level of collector appeal while adding value to the price point. I'm very surprised there isn't some kind of game or app for them already honestly.

Honestly, I'm surprised myself. I think there's a app where you can collect digital versions of Pop. But I think that's it. Maybe someday a Funko dev will take our ideas into consideration. And I wouldn't be surprised if they're already here taking notes. Incognito.
