Specialty Series

Postby tholin » Thu Jun 07, 2018 3:16 am

So, after the release of the latest additions to this line and the upcoming releases like The Wolfman, I HAVE to say that this turns out to be one of the best lines/waves Funko had created in a long time.
I do not know where to start with the great POPs we have seen already, but below is a list of what I found amazing additions to new or pre-existing lines through the Specialty Series:
Anung Un Rama - Amazing design and sculpt
Tygra - For us that missed the release of the original Thunder Cats line, this is a great chance to own a Pop from that franchise
Popeye - I am just speechless with how great this Pop looks
2 Extra MOTU releases (Man at Arms & Trap Jaw)
Alana w/ baby Hazel
...etc

What is also great is the availability of these POPs. You can find them both at major retailers and smaller shops/online shops, making it easier for collectors to get them. Especially for us overseas collectors this is a great feature, since we do not have access to a large amount of larger US retailers exclusives.

What is also great is that Funko , through the Specialty Series, can support smaller retailers who dont have the ability to spend great amounts of royalties for exclusive releases of their own. The support to those small local stores is something that will have a great impact in the long run for Funko as a company. There are other companies that have moved to different directions (i.e support mostly large chains and offer scraps to smaller retailers) and seem to lose the grip of their own communities in recent years, causing a lot of problems and a loss of their actual fan base (call me WOTC :P )

Plus, you have the chance of preorder in a lot of stores that carry the Specialty Series, in order to avoid all tha hassle of products going live at a specific date & time and all the problems this has caused.

Finally, because of the broad availability of these releases, we avoid flippers and their practices of taking advantage of bots, etc to grab massive amounts of exclusives and sell them for a premium

Did I mention it before ( lol ), but KUDOS really to the people at Funko who came up with this idea for the Specialty Series :)

What do you ppl think about this line?

Sorry for the lenghty post :)

Specialty Series Pops are great! I’m not a fan of all of them since they do cover a wide range of lines but the majority of them are must haves. I really like Popeye, Krypto, Wolfman, and a lot more. It seems like they’re getting better and better which seems impossible but they continue to knock it out of the Park.

My only complaint with the specialty series is when a variant of the original is made later on (e.g. flocked Gossamer, diamond form Emma Frost). Often times I end up regretting buying the original when I could have just gotten the version I preferred more...but I guess this is the case for Funko products in general.

I love the specialty series line! I agree that it is great for smaller retailers, especially local comic book shops, that can't afford to do huge buys to be able to make smaller purchases but still have cool items to bring people in.

I really enjoy this line also. Especially since this particular one is from the NBC franchise. It’s also nice that a lot of my local comic shops now carry these. I look forward to seeing this in person some time soon.

Im glad they have something for the smaller retailers. Just dont like how these smaller retailers mark them up so much. At legends comics its minimum 20 bucks and they put a dang price tag on it. So i always pass until i can find it somewhere else. Ill spend the 20 if i really like it but not if i have to take the price tag off and risk messing up my box. #boxlivesmatter

tbh I believe there are good and bad stores everywhere and especially with the Specialty Series you can pretty much pass when a comic store sells them higher than normal and get them at a normal price elsewhere. Which is not the case when you see other big chain exclusives being sold 1-2$ higher than the normal rate of Pops because your only chance elsewhere is ebay where you have to pay premium

Agreed. Its good that Funko gives the smaller retailers something. I also hate it when the mark it up a lot.

LOVE the speciality series line. DO NOT love that they share them with large retailers like Amazon and sometimes walmart. The whole point was that these be available to smaller retailers ONLY. To share them with some of the big guys is contradictory to that. Now if it's smaller retailers selling through amazon, that's one thing, but I don't think that's always the case.

Love the Specialty Series! It’s a great way to get some rad sculpts and characters out there who might not have the sales for a full release otherwise. Plus the sticker and limited run create hype that would otherwise just have some of them warming shelves for far too long if they were a general release.

I hope it remains successful as it will just get more obscure from here on out.

I'm ashamed to say I just learned how the specialty stickers is done. It sound great although I will say I usually see them at conventions and some vendors do mark it up a hefty price but many are reasonable at around the $20 range. I think everyone is picking up on this demand for funko pops so they take any opportunities to inflate the price where they can for exclusives/specialty series, etc.

That is a pet peeve of mine too, the stores that put the price stickers right there on the front of the boxes. Most of the time I just pass.

I agree! I love how smaller stores are able to get something specially made for them, and this makes me go to family owned stores to check out other stuff that they might have.
