Ratios debate! Do you prefer high ratios or all 1/12 sets?
Thoughts?
While exciting it is to find rare and high ratio minis and store exclusives, do you prefer the hunt/thrill/chase or do you prefer all 1/12 sets that are easily obtainable? Do you care for value in minis or not? If you have a top 10 PPG for minis, then you kind of do care right?
Why so?

Personally I prefer:
Sets that are all 1/12 with store exclusives being 1/12
Or
Sets that have 1/24 and 1/36 mixed in with all stores exclusives being 1/12. That way you incentivize people to go to the store to get exclslusives that are guaranteed and another chance for a 1/36 chase (which should satisfy everyone as effeciently as possible).
I don't like having to pay extra or wait longer for certain minis because of rarity or exclusivity, but I know some like the hunt. As long as store exclusives are 1/12 I am pretty happy.
Edit: To add to why: Most stores only get one case, and some places people live may have only one Walmart or one Gamestop in the area or nearby. It makes it hard enough to compete with other collectors, so throwing in 1/24 and beyond exclusives just makes it harder and encourages scalping sadly. I think store exclusives are fine because it lets you add three or so more figures to the line up that may not otherwise make the cut.

I agree. A balance of both is always good! Enough to make it a fun hunt but easier to obtain. It's those store exclusive 1/72...don't like the Specialty Series or when TRU Solo minis were at Funko shop only. Still needing 1/72 Sailor Mars and Han Solo flightsuit are ridic....

As long as they eliminate the 1/6 all rates are essential to the hobby.
If all are 1/12 above, you get less dupes. If all are 1/12, often line doesnt sell since can get a complete set much easier. No 1/6 is way to go.

I don’t really see a reason why they bother with the 1/6 ratio mini’s. When I buy several and I get two or theee is the same I get so frustrated!

Re: Ratios debate! Do you prefer high ratios or all 1/12 sets?
I enjoy varying ratios, as it adds to the thrill of the hunt.
What I don't like are exclusives that become near impossible to obtain due to limited runs (Sailor Moon...I'm looking at you).
I do not like 1/72 exclusives for reasons already mentioned' some stores only get one case.
In Canada, sometimes stores don't even get a case of exclusives (EB Games... I'm looking at you).
I do not like exclusives that are impossible to get outside the US (Target, Walgreens, etc.).
I would really love for Funko to find collaborative stores that carry them here. They did that with Nightmare Before Christmas (the Walgreens Excl were carried at EB Games). Even if they had a preferred distributor who offered these cases, that would be great.
1/6s are not my favourite ratio. Every time I get one of those I feel as though I've lost the game .

I like a mix of both...I do like the thrill of opening that 1/72 store exclusive but it’s also nice to get an all 1/12 set sometimes. I absolutely hate the 4 1/6’s though! That’s just plain greed.

I enjoy the fun of the hunt! I don't mind an entire box of 1/12 if it's some IP that I'm a fan of. But part of the fun for me is finding something rare that I wasn't expecting. What stinks is when some stores like walgreens and walmart get high ratioed exclusives and some of those stores might not ever see a case! *Cough* Warner Bros *Cough*

Eliminate 1/6 and anything above 1/36, and keep store exclusives at 1/12 and I think you have the perfect balance between hunting and collecting. Anything else and you are just generating profit for well-connected flippers rather than the company itself. The biggest problem is with store exclusives. How do you have a 1/72 exclusive at a store that is going to only ever get 24-36 in stock? I find it very hard to believe that anyone was at Hot Topic buying box after box of LotR hoping for an Eowyn or Lurtz once they realized how impossible they would be to stumble across. I mean even a large city with six HTs (and how many of those are there?) that all restocked once would only have two of each figure in the entire city. That is ridiculous. I get that some level of after-market keeps vitality in your fan base, but Funko has missed out on money they could have earned from me as I have personally limited the number of sets I have pursued because of this issue.

I don't mind differing ratios, but would prefer nothing harder than 1:24. I also hate the 1:6 ratios.

The other thing I wonder about is what the cost per item is to manufacture the really rare figures. It must be higher than the 1/6's. That means it isn't helping Funko to make rare pieces, unless your business model is to get your most die-hard fans to buy all the 1/6's in the search for that 1/72. If that is your business model, than your product isn't really as popular as you think, you have just been successful in developing addictions to it. I'm frankly shocked that eBay doesn't get flooded by rare figures that were manufactured because of minimum order sizes and then dumped into a Chinese or Vietnamese landfill. I would be happy to get a Lurtz that way, as authenticity is in the design and manufacture, not the packaging, but something tells me they are pretty good at making sure those get destroyed, rather than discarded. There is probably a solid Vinyl mass of compacted/melted Buckbeaks sitting on the bottom of the Indian or Pacific Ocean right now....

It depends on the series. Series with a large number of characters its cool to have the 1/72 because its a thrill to find. On series with a small number of characters it becomes a hassle. The fun part is the hunt. The frustrating part is the boxes with multiple 1/6

Haha yeah I'm interested in the decision between choosing the commons and rares too!
I've been thinking about it a lot over the years and have a theory on rarity decision:
If a character is 1) Most known character, 2) Everyone (casual or hardcore fans) will want, 3) Harder to manufacture/more detailed -> More likely to be common
If a character is 1) Obscure or secondary character, 2) Only hardcore fans will chase, 3) Easier to manufacture/less detailed -> More likely to be rare
I think the rarer figures are made less of to off-set production costs and make people want it. Like you don't want a ton of figures of a character only hardcore fans want, or else they won't sell as many. If you're going to lower quantity, then quality (paint/mold/production) cost should be lowered too or else why bother? On the other hand, if you want to make a high quantity of a figure people want, you can make it more complicated and the effects on the production costs will be less impactful. Of course there are some that seem like obvious ploys to make people buy more (which is totally fine, just frustrating at times for fans), and I think sometimes they underestimate fandom popularity. At the same time I'm betting they go through a lot of meetings and cost decisions before going 'Yeah, lets make all the Bounty Hunters from Empire Strikes Back chases'.

1/12 is what I prefer. If I’m agreeing to buy a case, then let me try and have all the characters in an assortment.
1/6 is as annoying as 1/72.

I don’t think that I have ever really heard a compelling reason from a company about insane ratios other than “It’s fun to hunt for the rare ones!” If I want to commit to a full case, there should be some incentive and duplicates are not a great way to incentivize that.

I don't mind rares, as long as they're not exclusives. 1/72 store exclusives makes it so hard to collect. Especially at stores like HT, where they don't tend to re-stock more than a couple of times. If 1/72s are in common cases, it makes them easier to get. I'm happy with the more recent trend of the store exclusives being 1/12s. Getting the Game of Thrones HT exclusives for the latest set was a breeze.

I like 1/72s etc with exclusives being 1/12. Toy story is a perfect example. There’s still something to chase without killing yourself on the exclusives

I prefer the 1/12, it’s not fun looking for a 1/72 or even a 1/36 mini. I actually like the Mickeys 90th style that has the window so you just pick the ones you want.

I prefer 1/12 ratios. I honestly find it hard enough when they are 1/12 to find a full case because there are lots of people who will still buy just a few.

100% agreed on both approaches and prefered order too. Some say 1/12 is boring I get that but I want all the characters. I persoanlly like Series 3 of GOT where it was all 1/12 and with HT getting 3 store exclusives (still 1/12).

The ideal set would have no 1/6s, store exclusives that don't go higher than 1/12 (MAYBE 1/24), and cap out at 1/72. Still allows people to hunt and get excited at finding rares, but cuts down on the frustration of not being able to get the store exclusive rares. It can be disheartening to go to a Target that only gets one box in and find the two good slots missing already, with no shot at restocks.

1/12 only sets are also nice because you can just buy a whole case and be set. Though it does take some of the excitement out of hunting.

I don't mind when a set has 2 1/6's but this 4 1/6's per set that is being used on a lot of them now is really killing my desire to buy minis, which is a shame because they are a pretty great product.

Re: Ratios debate! Do you prefer high ratios or all 1/12 sets?
The problem with all 1/12 is that it seems like the releases are smaller, so the entire sets are still considered rare. At least with the sets that go up to 1/96, they are released in a much larger quantity to account for the more rare pieces.
That being said, I like both styles. Being able to buy a sealed case and get all the minis is great, but I also enjoy the feeling of owning the more rare pieces too.

Sarcasticguy wrote:The problem with all 1/12 is that it seems like the releases are smaller, so the entire sets are still considered rare. At least with the sets that go up to 1/96, they are released in a much larger quantity to account for the more rare pieces.
That being said, I like both styles. Being able to buy a sealed case and get all the minis is great, but I also enjoy the feeling of owning the more rare pieces too.
i like dis.

The higher the ratio, the better. Makes hunting them more fun for me.
I am not in danger, I am the danger! A guy opens his door and gets shot and you think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks!

This legitimately ended collecting MMs for me. It's hard enough to find every piece without 4 1/6 screwing things up. I'd really like it if the smallest ratio in sets went back to 1/12. Sure they may add more 1/6 to get people to buy more, but like for me all it did was backfire.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I just kept getting so many duplicates that it didn’t make sense to keep buying. So I just stopped buying them. I would love a 1/12 ratio again.

Re: Ratios debate! Do you prefer high ratios or all 1/12 sets?
I believe I have the semi-unique and unrepresented perspective (at least in this thread) of somebody who vastly benefits off of the second market. Even if I can find cases in the wild, I rarely have the money to buy more than a few minis at a time and I never have very much interest in completing a set. Therefore, I very often turn to here, eBay or my Mystery Mini Funko group to look for the figures I want.
From personal experience, I believe that it is much easier and cheaper for me to find and purchase doubles from the sets with varying rarities than from the sets with all 1/12.
When you look at the values of two recent sets, Infinity war and DC Bombshells, this becomes Numerically clear too.
The common 9 from Infinity War (rarities ranging from 1/6-1/72) have a total combined value of $69, with values ranging from $3-$20 and an average value of $7.66.
The common 9 for DC Bombshells (All 1/12) have a total combines value of $77, with values ranging from $7-11 and an average value of $8.55.
Obviously, as somebody who is collecting by buying people's extras, Infinity War seems like a better option for me.
HOWEVER, I do often still buy a mini or two in stores, so I understand the sentiment of those who wish more sets were 1/12. I really think that it has also come to a head with the Endgame series. Having 4 1/6 and every 1/72 be an exclusive is just too much.
I personally think that the happy medium is sets like GOT Series 4 and Toy Story 4, where there is the 1/6-1/72 range of rarities, but all of the exclusives are common. I hope that this is the direction that more minis go!
