Strange and Mysterious

Postby Scotty » Sun Oct 20, 2013 12:58 pm

So, some of you may remember when I danced this guy a while back. My first wax proto.

Image

What I didn't report back then was there was a bit of a peculiarity about this proto. I reached out to a few Funatics to ask their opinions, as well as an early owner of this piece. So, first, take a look at a few pics so you can see what I saw.

Back of the base.

You can see the seam where it was cut open, then resealed.

Pretty cool, huh. I will admit, my first thought was that the Chinese were spying on Funko to learn all their vinyl secrets. But in reality, the device is a bit big for a clandestine listening device made by a world power--at least in the modern era--and it would have had more batteries, as well. I also wondered if it could have been someone at Funko playing around to add sound to this guy.

I heard back from Todd (Sting) who was an early owner of this bad boy. This is what he told me, "That is what makes that proto rare. It was originally going to be a talking Sylvester."

If anyone else has some insights into this piece, I'd sure love to hear them. Meanwhile, he's one cool wax proto. And just in case, I don't talk about anything very important in front of him. :D

That is very cool Scotty! Does it talk? Kind of odd to put batteries in it if it doesn't. But very cool!

No, unfortunately it doesn't work. The batteries were corroded, which I could have tried to replace, but there's also a broken wire. I didn't want to mess around with it too much because the wax is somewhat soft and don't want to damage it at all. I did take the batteries out because of how corrosive battery acid can be. Would have loved to have heard it. Just imagine, a lispy and slobbery "Sufferin' succotash!"

They do, but it's generally one battery, not 3 in a row like that.

I worded that wrong. I shouldve asked if the protos came with batteries. #-o

First of all awesome piece Scott but I have a question for you. Are you sure that is wax? First of all it is my understanding the reason they make wax protos is to make a mold, the artist sculpt the piece then they use it to make a mold and you lose the wax sculpture in the process because it melts away. That is what makes a wax proto super rare. Why would it have the copyright info or any writing on the bottom of the piece, the bottom is not part of the molding process that is added later on. It just funny to see writing on the bottom of the proto, have you tried to take a knife to the bottom to scrap a piece off. I know that sounds crazy but it would let you know if it is really wax. Still such a amazing piece!

Well, color me disappointed. Jacob, you're right. After some closer examination, it is indeed not wax. Still a cool proto, but not what I thought it was. Oh well. Back on the hunt for my first wax proto.

What was also odd about this piece was that the head is attached with a spring. I looked more carefully, and there is a wire attached to the spring and running down the inside of the body. So, this was a full mock up for the talking Sylvester. Wonder why they never produced it.

Still a great Proto Scott but I also noticed it is hollow which means it is spin casted so another give away. The funny part is it looks like wax from the pictures. Never the less that should be one of your prize position in your collections and I've seen some of your collection that is how great it is.
